100+ Motivational Workout Songs

by tinareale on March 21, 2012

Search for different workout and running playlists and you will undoubtedly find lots of great suggestions- including many of my other favorites, I’m sure.

However, when recently updating my music for the Georgia Half Marathon, I noticed something. I am really really really really drawn to Contemporary Christian hits for my workout music….and not just because of my personal beliefs. These songs are just perfect for tough workouts and runs, but I could never really find a good resource for them. So, why not make one for myself and share it with you all?

For one, you can absolutely find some ROCKING Contemporary Christian music that has the right beat to get your heart pumping and legs hustling. Second, the songs have a lot of motivational lyrics about pushing through, facing challenges, and believing you can do anything that definitely can’t hurt when you hit that wall of a tough workout or race. And, well….God is just awesome!

Allow me to share a long list of my favorites. I have organized them into categories. I separated them out into their biggest selling points for a great workout song – a great beat, inspiring words, high energy, a catchy/feel-good vibe – but each honestly has all these qualities. Check them out! You may surprise yourself and find something you love that was completely unexpected!

Awesome! I just asked that question on my blog yesterday! It was from the 8K I ran on Sat, realizing, I was low on Christian music that would help me push through the run. Plus, it’s always nice to have a run outside and a song will come on to help me think about the Lord.

2 Cait Martin @ Breathe in. Breathe out. Live on. March 22, 2012 at 7:00 am

This is a fantastic list! I have been listening to the same “Jesus Jams” playlist for almost a year now, and am definitely due for an update. Thank you so much for the suggestions and constant encouragement!

3 Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance March 22, 2012 at 7:09 am

Not only am I going to use these for workouts, but for EVERYTHING ELSE! Thanks Tina :D

4 chelsey @ clean eating chelsey March 22, 2012 at 7:18 am

My radio station is always 100% of the time turned on KLOVE. I love being able to sing it out on my way to and from work. It’s the best!

5 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries March 22, 2012 at 9:08 am

me too! :)

6 Maggie March 22, 2012 at 9:26 am

I agree- listening to KLOVE first thing in the morning on my way to school definitely starts the day on the right note :D

7 Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance March 24, 2012 at 5:20 am

Just looked this up and there’s no K-LOVE in Orlando. Boooo :(

8 tinareale March 24, 2012 at 6:03 am

You can listen online! :)

9 Danielle October 26, 2012 at 1:38 am

iheartradio.com has KLOVE on it, also they have an app of ipods, iphones, ipads and probably droids also.

10 Christy March 22, 2012 at 7:20 am

I didn’t realize the Like a Lion by the David Crowder Band was a different version of the Newsboys song! Can’t wait to check it out! I love the David Crowder Band! Thanks for the list.

11 Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon March 22, 2012 at 7:51 am

I don’t know many of the artists on this list but Relient K does hold a special place in my heart–my friends and I listened to them quite a bit in high school!

One of my good friends used to be a HUGE Sanctus Real fan. I remember that one of the first times I met her, way back in 9th grade, she showed me her sneaker which several of the band members had signed!

12 Stephanie March 22, 2012 at 7:57 am

Mat Kearney’s most recent album is awesome for easy run days! The songs have a good beat but they’re not super speedy :)

13 tinareale March 22, 2012 at 1:32 pm

Thanks for the rec!

14 Jess March 22, 2012 at 7:57 am

OMG I heart you!! I just posted about needing music for my barre classes and some of these will totally work for that! PLUS – I love listening to music while I work and these are some awesome tunes, I’m a big fan of Christian music too – “found” Matt Maher on pandora and am totally hooked on him! Thank you for this!!!

15 lindsay March 22, 2012 at 8:02 am

friend, these are amazing! i love all the songs. Jeremy camp, tenth ave. north, oh gosh.. GOD IS GOOD here.
<3

16 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat March 22, 2012 at 8:03 am

Oh wow Tina, this is an AWESOME list!! I love Where I Belong by Building 429 and I still adore the old Newsboys songs. I used to be totally obsessed with Phil Joel and when he put out his own album, I loved the song ‘Together’. It’s definitely not a workout song but such a lovely relaxing one – maybe good for a cool-down! If you haven’t heard it, the link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IAKkd6FmWk. I’m going to listen to all these songs at work today!

17 tinareale March 22, 2012 at 1:33 pm

Thanks for sharing that. I have to check it out! :)

18 Lauren March 22, 2012 at 8:07 am

Love Chris Tomlin and Tenth Ave North! I walked down the aisle to a Chris Tomlin song and every time I hear it, I still tear up. Often I will play it during my long runs and it always makes me think of my wedding day.

19 Lauren March 22, 2012 at 8:08 am

Funny as soon as I posted this comment, Tenth Ave North just came on my Pandora. How ironic! :)

20 crystal October 14, 2013 at 1:06 pm

What song did you walk down to?

21 bri carpenter March 22, 2012 at 8:11 am

Thanks Tina for such an awesome resource post. New music is always great for keeping workouts fresh and not boring. Working out to Christian music also really helps me keep perspective as to why I am doing every workout – to honour God with my body – and not get caught up in all sorts of other things that sometimes go along with working out.

22 Lori Lynn March 22, 2012 at 8:17 am

Manic Drive and Press Play are two other Christian bands that I absolutely LOVE. They both have new albums that I have listened to over and over. Manafest, Rapture Ruckus, Thousand Foot Krutch, The Afters, and Anthem Lights are a couple more Christian bands that have some really good workout music too!

23 mindy @ just a one girl revolution. March 22, 2012 at 8:24 am

This is an awesome list, Tina – LOVE it!

24 Lindsay @ Lindsay's List March 22, 2012 at 8:29 am

Love practically all of these songs!! Although there were some that I’ve never heard of before and will have to download! Like A Lion is on my list now!

Download some of Cory Asbury’s songs – he leads worship at IHOP in Kansas City and he’s from Franklin! Psalm 18 is an upbeat one of his that I use for running.

25 Samantha March 22, 2012 at 8:45 am

I love SO MANY of these songs and was completely clueless that they’re Christian songs. Great list!

26 tinareale March 22, 2012 at 3:49 pm

Just goes to show that Christian music doesn’t mean gospely music. ;)

27 Tina March 22, 2012 at 9:04 am

Thanks for sharing! I’ve been wanting to add some new songs to my playlist, I’ll definitely be using your list! One that I really love running to is Lecrae, he’s a christian rapper. His lyrics are amazingly motivating, and the fast beats keep me moving!

28 tinareale March 22, 2012 at 3:54 pm

I’ll have to check him out!

29 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries March 22, 2012 at 9:09 am

31 Marty September 5, 2012 at 10:00 pm

Did you ever compile these into a spotify playlist? I would be very interested in using it for my running workouts!

32 Ali @ Around the VeggieTable September 6, 2012 at 9:09 am

I did actually! I think I need your email address to share it with you, right? So if you give me that I’d be happy to figure out how to send it to you :)

33 Cindy Stephens August 5, 2013 at 10:54 pm

I LOVE contemporary Christian for workout music. I REALLY love Casting Crowns :)

36 Maggie March 22, 2012 at 9:25 am

I’m excited to add some of the songs on this list I’ve never heard of to my playlist, too. Mandisa is another one of my favorites to run to as well, especially “Stronger” :)

I am so in love with this list…bookmarking and pinning!

43 Yellow Haired Girl March 22, 2012 at 10:59 am

You know, this wouldn’t be the kind of music I would typically use for a workout. But when I was younger, I LOVED MercyMe and Steven Curtis Chapman. Thanks for reminding me than I can go back to those old faves for some motivational tunes!

44 Christy March 22, 2012 at 11:28 am

Needtobreathe is an awesome group too. Lots of great songs to workout to.

45 Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut March 22, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Gah I love this list!! It is so amazing to be running and thinking about my creator. I had an awesome moment in my run yesterday only listening to praise music on top of a hill looking at all he has created for us…breathtaking!

Thanks for this list!! *bookmarking it*

46 Sabrina @ Radioactive Runner March 22, 2012 at 12:52 pm

great list! I’d like to add: I can only imagine – MercyMe.. maybe for a warmup or cool down. love that song!

47 tinareale March 22, 2012 at 3:57 pm

That song (instrumental) was part of our wedding processional. It gets me all emotional for so many reasons when I hear it.

48 Melissa March 22, 2012 at 12:52 pm

I love so many of these songs! I also love listening to Hawk Nelson when I run.

49 Raine March 22, 2012 at 2:23 pm

50 Annie @ What's Annie Making? March 22, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Oh this makes me so excited!!! Thank you so much for putting this list together. I love having some great Christian music in my workout playlists. Made To Love is constantly in my running playlists because the beat is perfect and it’s so encouraging to listen to. You rock!

51 anna, fitscally responsible March 22, 2012 at 3:24 pm

this is great timing! I was looking for new music to update my playlist. I don’t have particularly strong religious beliefs (ok, not very strong at all) but you’re right that the message is inspiring!

52 Kelly March 22, 2012 at 5:13 pm

Wow! Thank you! I need to update my playlist and this is just the perfect resource
:-)

53 Sarah @ A Runners Heart March 22, 2012 at 5:53 pm

58 JennyV March 22, 2012 at 9:27 pm

Great list!!!

My favorite Christian group is actually Elevation Worship based out of Charlotte (NC). I went to church there when I lived in the area and have to say that they are so talented! They have CDs on iTunes too

59 Jessica March 22, 2012 at 10:16 pm

love this! thanks!!

60 Kelly@Nutrition-Spotlight March 23, 2012 at 11:06 am

Music is amazing, and can be one of the best motivational tools for any obstacle in life- but it certainly plays a major part in getting through tough workouts or runs. Once you find a playlist that keeps you going no matter what, it can mean the difference between feeling good throughout your workout, and feeling like you just want to give up. I like your playlists especially because I’m sure the messages in these songs are mostly about perseverance and belief in yourself. I always gear toward up beat, feel-good music too, it makes me want to workout (end enjoy it) not just feel like I have to.

61 Vanessa March 23, 2012 at 6:57 pm

I love everyone of them!! My playlist is similiar. My favorite is Casting Crowns, Third Day, and Natalie Grant. :)

62 Deborah V March 23, 2012 at 8:21 pm

Thanks for this list. I’ve wished for something like this for a long time.

63 Amberly March 23, 2012 at 8:57 pm

Thank you Jesus for this list!!!! Oh, and Tina too! Haha… seriously though, I’ve been needing new songs, but I have also been needing some extra God time. Sometimes the music I listen to doesn’t affect my workout or my thinking in a positive way, so these songs will be a nice change. :)

64 Kim March 24, 2012 at 5:20 pm

Paul Baloche “I Will Boast”, another great one!

65 Melissa @ Live, Love, & Run March 24, 2012 at 5:42 pm

You know…I’ve never thought about adding Christian music to my playlist. I’m not even sure. I should, though, simply for the fact that I could use a little faith in my runs these days. I have a 5K in three weeks…and I haven’t even begun training. (Which will probably show in my time.) ;) I’ve been a huge Switchfoot fan for years, and it’d probably do me some good to add them in, eh? I’m so used to adding pop, hip hop, and dance to my lists that it never even crossed my mind to dive into that genre.

I’ll run through your list tonight…I start training tomorrow! Thanks, Momma. <3

67 Katie D. March 25, 2012 at 8:59 pm

This is a great list!!! Most people raise their eyebrows when I say I workout to Christian music, I think they imagine hymns and organs, but it really ROCKS!!

68 Jenna@FitForLife March 26, 2012 at 12:04 pm

This is great! I’ll admit, running is a huge struggle for me. My ability to stick to a work out is solely based on if I have good music to push me through, I’m so excited to download a few of theses and give them a try on my next run. Thank you so much!

69 Sarah H March 29, 2012 at 11:11 am

I am running my first 5K in a couple weeks. I am not a fan of running, so this is a huge growth thing for me and I find that Christian music really inspires me to keep running and training (along with the C25K program), but the music is invaluable. These songs remind me that it is not about me and I have God with me and His strength will get me through. Thank you soooo much for all the time and effort you put into this list!!! You just do not even know!

70 Sarah H March 29, 2012 at 11:11 am

I agree with those who have said this, but Lecrae is one of the BEST Christian artists to work out to!!

We finished our first 5k on may fifth and are looking forward to many more with great music to listen to:) We listen to way Fm mostly so this music is mostly our fav artists/songs.

87 Heather June 23, 2012 at 7:39 pm

I just found this linked to Pinterest and I can’t thank you enough for it! I ran a half marathon last year and would have loved to have these songs on my playlist. I’m restructuring my workout mix and I definitely plan to add some of these to it. :-)

88 Jill June 25, 2012 at 11:49 pm

This is the first comment I’ve ever made but this list was so great. I also live some of the othe suggestions I read about in the comments. I would like to add one more really great workout band- Group One Crew. They have some really perfect songs to work out to like Clap ya Hands and Let It Roll. Thanks again!

91 Yvonne July 6, 2012 at 1:57 am

Found this post on Pinterest! Thank you for compiling such a great list! Mandisa has a great new song called ‘Good Morning’, great beat and lyrics!

92 tinareale July 6, 2012 at 6:53 am

I love that song! Thanks for visiting! :)

93 Sarah July 14, 2012 at 9:59 pm

my most favorite christian workout music is Lecrae, anything by Lecrae. I also like Tedashi, Flame, and a lot of guys who are in the 116 clique (romans 1:16). It is hip hop – good hip hop. Some people have come to think that Christian music doesn’t have the beats like mainstream, but this music puts mainstream hip hop to shame!

When i workout I put on lecrae and set it to shuffle. Awesome workout every time

94 the whyte house July 15, 2012 at 10:35 am

check out toby mac’s remixed album. awesome beats for running and such. also, britt nicole has some amazing upbeat songs on all 3 of her albums.

95 Allison July 16, 2012 at 8:40 pm

I can’t believe none of Beckah Shae’s songs are on that list! My all time favorite song to run to is her song “Holy” — CHECK IT OUT!

96 Susan July 18, 2012 at 11:31 pm

Thank you!! That took a lot of time to compile! Great lists and also from the ones that responded! I have lots of itunes purchasing to do.:-). I grew up with CCM (age 42) and never get tired of hearing new & more songs as my two young boys grow up with that music. I listen to three different CCM stations and always learn of a new song or group that way.
FB Page
Susan Faia Eaton or Susan’s Decorated Sweets (& that’s why I NEED this list-lol)

97 Kristen July 28, 2012 at 4:39 pm

Great list! But you can add anything by The Rocket Summer. All up beat christian music. Check out: Run and Don’t Stop- The Rocket Summer.

98 Lindsey July 29, 2012 at 7:43 am

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! It’s amazing to see how many people you have blessed with this (and that’s just the people that left comments!). Another song is Shake Heaven by Montell Jordan. I know he was a mainstream one-hit wonder in the 90′s, but he is a worship leader in Atlanta now. This song may just be played locally, but is worth a listen. It gets me pumped up and puts a smile on my face every time!

99 Tina July 29, 2012 at 2:16 pm

I know exactly the song you’re talking about. It is a fun song and has a good beat for running. I’m from the area so they would play it regularly on my favorite radio station. :)

100 Chelsea August 1, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Thanks so much for including Christian rock! I listen to Power FM, but I just have a hard time remembering band names and song titles in general. This list reminded me of several I want on my iPod!

101 Katie August 11, 2012 at 3:36 pm

Desert Song by Hillsong United is a great one, too!

102 Susan August 14, 2012 at 9:15 pm

Thanks for posting this list! I’m looking forward to downloading some new songs! As someone already mentioned above Group1Crew is great for working out! Also, some good old Out of Eden from “back in the day!” :)

103 Karen August 19, 2012 at 6:14 pm

2 other great upbeat Christian song are “Talk About It” (Nicole C Mullen) and “Life” (Beckah Shae)

104 SAVANNAH PAYNE August 20, 2012 at 2:44 pm

Great list! I really love working out to Family Force 5!

105 Roshan Baskota September 3, 2012 at 10:28 am

Thank you for this wonderful list of music. I am listening them!

106 hadley September 10, 2012 at 1:48 am

is there somewhere i can just download them all?

107 Debbie Mc. October 16, 2012 at 3:51 pm

Yes! I’ve started Couch to 5k after a 3 year “break” from running, and the first workout I listened to a Cardio Dance Station on Pandora, and it was just really hard to get to the end. The next time I made a short playlist of Christian songs, and it made all the difference, so now that’s all I listen to when I do my workouts! You should listen to Free Chapel’s All Things New, Grace, and Graffiti Skies. They’re from a live worship album and they’re a little bit rock and pop and a little bit southern gospel, and the audience sounds make me feel like there’s a crowd cheering me on. :) All Things New is my new anthem. I can’t get healthy and fit on my own, but God can make my sick and broken body all new again!

108 Jess October 26, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Not that I work out.. (I would LOVE to start running just need to learn to push through it and eventually enjoy doing it) but this is the list I have been looking for, for the longest time! Thank you!!

109 tinareale October 27, 2012 at 6:43 am

If you are looking for a good start up to running, I highly suggest the Couch to 5K program. It’s what I used to get started and does a great job of slowly building up. The key is to keep the jogging light so not to burn out during those portions of the intervals.

Either way, I’m glad you enjoyed the list! There are great recommendations throughout the comments too. :)

110 Jess Ziegler October 29, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Thanks! I have tried similar programs like couch to 5k but I didnt use music.. I have pretty much downloaded every single one of these songs to my MP3 player :D

Britt Nicole is a very upbeat Christian artist – I think she would be great to workout to. :)

111 Sierra Fitzwater November 9, 2012 at 4:51 pm

You should try Flyleaf and Red too. They are both christian bands that I love!

112 Shelby Porter November 11, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Jake Hamilton- “War Drums.” This is the BEST workout song ever. It makes you train as if you are training for battle. I showed it to some football players at my college and they workout to it too now!! BEST EVER. Plus “Hallelujah” by Jake Hamilton and “Go Hard” by Lecrae are also good too :)

113 tinareale November 12, 2012 at 12:43 pm

I added some Lecrae after someone recommended him before. Very good stuff! Never heard of Jake Hamilton so I’m listening to those now on YouTube. They do have strong beats good for running. Thanks for the recs!

114 Joan November 12, 2012 at 11:05 am

Oh my goodness! I just asked my friends today for suggestions, then found your site. Thanks so much for the posting! A lot of times I know the songs, but not the artist, so it’s hard to find.

120 Darcey January 3, 2013 at 11:16 am

Love your list, thanks! I also love anything by, RED, Skillet, Lecrae, Family Force 5, Disciple especially Game On, Thousand Foot Krutch, P.O.D, and Pillar. They are a bit of a harder rock in some cases, but great for keeping me moving!!

124 Holly from 300 Pounds Down February 26, 2013 at 11:16 pm

I am so excited to have found this post!! I have been looking for something like this for a long time. I love Mandisa! thanks for this list

125 Megan March 5, 2013 at 6:08 pm

I just skimmed through, so I may have missed something, but I didn’t notice any songs by Lecrae. His songs are my favorites for running; great beats and culturally relevant lyrics.

126 ambien March 7, 2013 at 1:29 pm

Thank you! I have a hard time finding good running music!

128 Christina April 18, 2013 at 10:52 am

Thanks SO much for posting this! I’ve been trying to compile a good playlist to run to. I have several of these already, but it’s like every time I would try to think of songs with a good running rhythm, I’d draw a blank. I really appreciate this list. It’s fantastic!

129 tinareale April 18, 2013 at 11:42 am

Thanks for commenting and glad you like them! have a great day!

130 Steph May 7, 2013 at 11:10 am

Thank you for this list! My son has taken up running and I wanted to surprise him with a playlist. This is perfect. I was surprised that Relient K didn’t make the list more often because all their songs are so catchy – like “Sadie Hawkins Dance” and “High of 75″

131 france travel agent training June 4, 2013 at 4:11 pm

I wanted to thank you for this excellent read!! I certainly enjoyed every
bit of it. I have you book-marked to check out new stuff
you post…

132 Kristin June 16, 2013 at 4:56 pm

Pressing On by Relient K is one of my favourite running songs and always seems to come up in the shuffle just when I need it. I’m a little surprised it didn’t seem to make the list. Also, pretty much anything by Thousand Foot Krutch though Rawkfist is a favourite.

133 Jody July 10, 2013 at 1:37 am

Just googled christian workout songs and found your post. Great list. I have some of these, but others I might have to look at getting. If you haven’t checked out the new Passion CD, I recommend it as well as Chris Tomlin’s newest. I also love Building 429.

134 mary July 13, 2013 at 11:29 am

Great list! I only have christian music on my playlist & am always looking for positive songs with motivating beat. You should really check out Capital Kings album.awesome fast beats. Also really liking Brit Nicole-Gold.

135 Paulo July 17, 2013 at 1:27 pm

When I originally commented I clicked the
“Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added
I get several e-mails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service?
Appreciate it!

136 Erin July 22, 2013 at 2:36 pm

Thank you thank you thank you for this list! I’ve been trying to “renovate” my running music, and this is PERFECT!!!

137 Joanne September 1, 2013 at 8:25 pm

thanks so much!!

138 Jonny September 13, 2013 at 7:54 pm

I have a great one that was missed!! It’s called “Born to Run” by Eva Kroon Pike! http://evakroonpike.com/music.html It is a great running song based off the verse Hebrews 12:1. Also, I lost 90 pounds in 8 months by eating better and running, so she wanted to write a song to encourage me. It is my favorite song on my running playlist!

139 Nate September 15, 2013 at 8:08 am

These are great! I realized I had about 1/3 of them in my library. I’m looking to add in some classic Christian rock in the mix. Anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking some Petra, Steven Curtis Chapman, older newsboys/audio A. That sort of stuff. Any help would be great! I’m making a list for a 1/2 marathon, so the more the merrier!

Thanks!

140 Shirley Pierce September 30, 2013 at 2:22 pm

How can I download these songs?

141 カナダグース ジャケット 専門店 October 30, 2013 at 12:34 am

I always emailed this blog post page to all my associates,
since if like to read it next my contacts will too.

142 Christy November 13, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Thank you for these lists! Yay–songs to beef up my Christian Cardio Pandora station! I have also stumbled upon Lecrae and KJ-52 – a little more urban/rap and great for running! The song Jesus (reggaetown remix) by KJ-52 was so different and refreshing I laughed out loud when it came on (a little bit Latina!).

143 Elizabeth Robitaille January 13, 2014 at 2:10 am

Thank you!!!! this is an amazing list. I absolutely adore “Love Take Me Over” by Steven Curtis Chapman – always makes me run faster!

144 Lisa February 15, 2014 at 9:30 pm

I love this list for workouts, but an added bonus is these will also be great songs for my children. I love to keep them in focus instead of listing to the current less than holy tunes coming out of the “in” artist of the moment. Thanks!!
