Fun Fact Friday–Travel Edition

by tinareale on May 4, 2012

Good morning!!! Guess what I’ve been up to this week? Preparing for a little something special.

I’m headed to Boulder, Colorado baby!!!! This will be the farthest west I have ever traveled in the States. In fact, I think the most west I have gone before this in the States was like Alabama. And I live in Georgia. Sad.

I have actually visited more foreign countries than U.S. states.

I spent a lot of my childhood taking cruises all around the Caribbean. I wish I had some old throwback pictures of those days for you. They’re awesomely hilarious. Think huge bangs, posing with an iguana, and Limited Too outfit. You get the mental picture.

Peter and I hope to take another cruise late this year or early next with some friends. I’m already excited just thinking about it. I wonder if I can convince them all to do a theme night a la Julie??

Anyway.

Then, in my young adulthood, I spent about two months traveling all around Europe.

and I did not just run 20 miles…although how GOOD would that taste after a long run???

Then I got engaged…married…popped out two kiddos…got more reasonable and realized I can’t spend ALL my money on epic vacations in one fell swoop again…

So, needless to say, I’ve been fairly stoked at the travel I’ve been able to do the past couple of years to places here in the good ole U.S. of A. – like Philadelphia (three times), Indianapolis (hi Mandy!), Baltimore, and our usual beach trips.

Now, I get to go to Colorado and Ohio in just the next few weeks – for the Blend Retreat and then for my first marathon. I’m not going to lie. I love travel revolving around blog friends and running.

at the Healthy Living Summit last August with my roomies

I even have a top ten list of cities I want to visit.

#1 – Chicago!!! <—which I will be visiting later this year to run marathon #2 and hang out with this fabulous lady

Haha! You love coming to visit my blog and seeing a huge picture of your face, don’t you, Chelsey?

#2 – San Francisco (with a drive up the coast to some wine country)

#3 – New York (yea, I’ve never been)

#4 – Hawaii (come on, it’s Hawaii!)

#5 – Miami

#6 – Las Vegas (for the shows and the food…yea)

#7 – San Diego

#8 – Grand Canyon

#9 – somewhere pretty and cool to hike in Oregon or Utah…or somewhere

Oregon Hiking
…like this…

#10 – Washington D.C. (well, I’ve actually been here but I was in 5th grade on a school trip)

A few of those places have pretty awesome races. Just saying. And warning Peter. Although if wine or hiking or late nights Vegas style are involved, I’m not interested. Winking smile

Well, it’s about time for me to hit the road. As in, go cram in my long run for the week before grabbing as many hugs and kisses as possible from my two little ones before flying my way to a weekend with lots of fabulous friends. I can’t wait! I’ll be back to regale you all with the adventures on Monday. Have a great weekend!

What is your favorite place you have traveled? Where do you REALLY want to visit? – Barcelona is my #1 place I have been. Outside of the U.S. places I have listed above, I would LOVE to go to Australia.

Woah, I didn’t know you have been to Germany before!!! (Where I’m from).
Looks like Oktoberfest in Bavaria to me?!

2 tinareale May 4, 2012 at 7:08 am

It was Munich during the World Cup. And SO fun!

3 Julia May 4, 2012 at 7:10 am

If you ever feel like coming to Germany again, especially Berlin, I’d be happy to be your tour guide…:-)

4 chelsey @ clean eating chelsey May 4, 2012 at 7:02 am

BAHAHAHAH – I seriously could not stop laughing when I read this: “Haha! You love coming to visit my blog and seeing a huge picture of your face, don’t you, Chelsey?”

Because when I saw that massive picture I was like oh my gosh, why is this here? But then I realized it’s because of your Chicagggoooo trip! Yahoo!

5 Glenneth May 4, 2012 at 7:03 am

One of my favorite places is Hawaii – it is so beautiful, the pictures don’t do it justice. I really want to visit Australia (and play with koalas).

6 lindsay May 4, 2012 at 7:12 am

have a blast!! and New Zealand needs to be on that list, oh and AUSTIN!

7 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats May 4, 2012 at 7:13 am

Haha I actually noticed that was a trend when I went to school in Charleston, SC. No one ever traveled west! One girl couldn’t even tell me what states were out there… don’t worry, she’s one of my best friends, I love her. But you will LOVE Boulder – it’s one of my favorite places, actually Colorado in general is one of my favorite places – I might move there! As for me, one of my life goals is to visit all 50 states! I’ve already got 30 down! It helps that I grew up in Kansas City, smack in the middle of the country!

8 Lauren May 4, 2012 at 7:20 am

Have a blast in Colorado lady! I’ve always wanted to visit New Orleans and I happen to be going there this July for work.

9 Cheryl @ Happy is the new healthy May 4, 2012 at 7:42 am

YAY! I would LOVE to see Boulder — maybe I’ll try to visit blogger buddy Kate (http://runningopenroads.wordpress.com/) there once she moves!

In the States, I love going to Philadelphia/Pennsylvania! My family lives all around the state so the drive can be filled with pit stops that are reunions! And we’ve been driving down to bike and do the Gran Fondo in Philly for two summers and I love it!

Elsewhere, I was lucky enough to go to Europe in high school, but I absolutely have to say my favourite place in the world is the Canadian Rockies. Banff/Jasper/Lake Louise! I go about once a year and I never want to come home.

10 Elizabeth @ reads recipes runs May 4, 2012 at 8:08 am

I am so excited to meet you!!! I’m the total opposit I’ve been to a lot of US states but not any other countries. A hiking trip to Utah would be amazing, such a beautiful state :)

11 Lee May 4, 2012 at 8:17 am

I loved Hawaii, London and Barcelona the most, I think.

12 Ali @ Around the VeggieTable May 4, 2012 at 8:41 am

Hope you have a great trip!! I haven’t done a ton of traveling but we JUST got back from our honeymoon in Punta Cana and it was glorious there! The beaches were breathtaking! My favorite city in the US is New Orleans, but the next place on our list to visit is Maine…it seems really pretty there :)

13 Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance May 4, 2012 at 8:44 am

I vote YESYESYES to Miami! Make sure you work on your Spanish before you head down though ;)

Have a great time in Colorado!

14 Lori Lynn May 4, 2012 at 8:46 am

Colorado is a very pretty state. Colorado Springs, Boulder, Denver areas are all really nice to see. I grew up in Nebraska, but several hours from there, so didn’t go until I was an adult. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous! I would love to visit Ireland (especially after seeing the movie Leap Year with Amy Adams), and also Prince Edward Island (Canada).

15 runblondie26 May 4, 2012 at 8:48 am

Whew, you do get around though! I’d love for you to share more about your time galavanting around Europe.

I agree, Spain is probably my favorite foreign country. Japan is next on my “to-do” list, but you leave JFK on a Saturday and you don’t arrive until Monday! I need to save up some more vacation time for that one.

16 runblondie26 May 4, 2012 at 8:49 am

Enough the retreat too, sounds like a lot of fun!

17 Alex @ therunwithin May 4, 2012 at 8:53 am

I am so jealous, this all looks amazing. I love traveling new places and bringing my sneakers with me. It is so much easier to explore on a run! Meeting bloggers in person is one of my lofty dreams!

18 Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers May 4, 2012 at 8:53 am

Have a great weekend. I can’t wait to hear about it. :) I am super pumped about my summer trip to Prague/Barcelona, but I have to admit, I’d like to squeeze in some more USA travel.

19 Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona May 4, 2012 at 8:58 am

I think it should be mandatory for everyone to go on an epic international trip. Mine have been so amazing and I learned so much about myself and the places I visited.

Hope you have a great time in Boulder. It looks like a beautiful place.

20 Lindsay @ FuelMyFamily May 4, 2012 at 9:08 am

I have always wanted to go to Hawaii! Although now that we have kids are traveling is way more expensive!

21 Lindsay @ FuelMyFamily May 4, 2012 at 9:17 am

wow that pretzel and beer look right up my alley! All of your traveling plans sound like so much fun. I want to go to Hawaii!

22 Lindsay @ FuelMyFamily May 4, 2012 at 9:18 am

oops sorry, dont know why that posted in two different posts

23 Caitlin @ This Bride's Joyride May 4, 2012 at 9:29 am

That pretzel looks delicious!

Excited to hear the Blend Retreat details :)

My favorite place I have travelled was Argentina. The country was gorgeous, the food was delicious and the people were so incredibly welcoming. I REALLY want to go to Italy on an eating and drinking wine tour!

24 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries May 4, 2012 at 10:10 am

yep, you should definitely make your way to utah for some beautiful hiking! utah is not given nearly enough credit for its beautiful scenery! oh, and another bonus of coming to utah? you get to meet up with me! :)
have fun in colorado this weekend! boulder is gorgeous!

25 Yellow Haired Girl May 4, 2012 at 10:47 am

Have fun!!! It sounds like it’s going to be a fabulous time.

My fave place is Rome. I went in high school and it was fantastic. I really, really want to get to New York. That’s #1 on the list right now :)

26 Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Munches & Moves May 4, 2012 at 10:49 am

I want to go EVERYWHERE. Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Thailand, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Croatia. I think my #1 is the Patagonia region of Chile and Argetina. In the states, Kentucky for the Bourbon trail. Have fun in CO! Can’t wait to hear all about it.

27 Carol @ Lucky Zucca May 4, 2012 at 10:51 am

It is so hard to pick just one place!! My #1 place I’ve been has to be New Zealand though I can’t pick just one city there… Florence would come in a close second because I can’t help but love it. I want to go to Barcelona so badly! I never made it while I was living in Europe or while studying in Spain. I hope you have so much fun in Colorado at Blend!! It is a beautiful part of the country.

28 Stephanie @ My Freckled Life May 4, 2012 at 10:53 am

My favorite place that I visited was HANDS DOWN Paris. I lived there for a few months while studying abroad, and it is such an amazing city! Plus, all the walking totally negates the delicious French pastries, right? In terms of places I want to go – I would probably say either Greece or Russia (in the summer… I don’t do snow). Greece seems beautiful and I’ve watched Mamma Mia enough times to make me jealous, and I took 2 years of Russian in college and I would LOVE to test it out!

29 Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile May 4, 2012 at 11:02 am

Have so much fun! You will LOVE the west coast. I want to go to San Fran so bad because I’ve only been to SoCal. I love colorado too, it’s gorgeous!

30 Lisa @ The Splattered Apron May 4, 2012 at 11:17 am

I know it’s #10 but YES COME TO DC!!!!!!

31 Lindsay @ Lindsay's List May 4, 2012 at 11:24 am

Who wouldn’t want to look at Chelsey’s face?!?!
I’m going to hug you really hard today!

32 Jess @ Blonde Ponytail May 4, 2012 at 12:46 pm

HAVE A BLAST! BLEND sounds amazing with all of you lovely ladies.

I want to visit some east coast cities like NYC, Boston and DC. Heading to SF next weekend!!

33 Lisa May 4, 2012 at 1:03 pm

Safe travels! And have an absolutely amazing time! I have not travelled to that many places in the US, since I’m from Canada, but would love to travel anywhere! Seriously, I also would really like to live their someday

34 Lauren (@poweredbypb) May 4, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Love your list of places to travel to! Bolivia is my favourite country I have ever traveled in, so beautiful and diverse. My favourite cities are San Fran, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Barcelona and New York. I can’t pick between them which is my favourite :P I love travelling, hopefully I will be heading back to San Fran later this year!

35 Laurie @Love, Laugh, laurie May 4, 2012 at 3:46 pm

I love so many different cities in the USA, but I want to travel to Greece so bad. Number one choice! Followed closely by Tokyo

36 jobo May 4, 2012 at 3:48 pm

Love this post! Happy travels this week!! I have been to Hawaii (as you know!) and loved it, Kauai was ridiculously beautiful and serene. Love to go back. I would love to go to Italy where my family is from (Sicily) and Greece, and Australia, too! And Ireland. I have NEVER been abroad!! I would also like to go to the Keys, Bermuda, basically, all of the islands in the song ‘Kokomo’ – reasonable, right? Been to handful, have many a travelin years left to go! (and def go to wine country!! can’t wait to go back!)

37 Michelle May 4, 2012 at 4:00 pm

We are going to San Francisco/Sonoma next week for my brother’s wedding and I CANNOT WAIT!!

I really want to take the kids to Europe. Maybe on a big backpacking tour or something when they are teens. I know going over there definitely humbled me and made me realized what I loved about the US.

Have fun in Boulder!!

38 Michelle@Peachy Palate May 4, 2012 at 4:02 pm

Favourite place had to be Vancouver, amazing city. I’ve been to Barcelona but had a bad weekend there, one thing after another went wrong. I would love to go back to New York!

39 Heather (Heather's Dish) May 4, 2012 at 4:06 pm

i LOVE LOVE LOVE hawaii…i would totally move there in a heartbeat if my heart didn’t already belong to texas :)

can’t wait to meet you tonight!

40 Marty May 4, 2012 at 4:19 pm

Alaska is my absolute favorite vacation to date. Hands down. It was a cruise that left out of Seattle (which is a pretty awesome place to visit as well) and went to tons of places, including Glacier Bay. We went whale watching, saw tons of wildlife, took amazing photos, went hiking, had sights like no other, heard an iceberg break off a glacier, and had the luxuries of the cruise ship as well. I must do this trip again. Now, running a marathon there? No. But to visit, for sure!

41 Claire May 4, 2012 at 5:33 pm

I grew up in Colorado and went to college in Boulder, so I’ve been really fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful places all my life. However, I have to say that the most spectacular place I have ever been is southern Oregon, along the Umpqua River and around Crater Lake (where that picture you posted is). We biked around Crater Lake and it was Amazing. I definitely recommend coming out to Oregon if you get a chance. There are so many amazing things to see. Have fun in Boulder and definitely check out Chataqua park and the flatirons if you get a chance. Wish I could be there.

42 natalie @ southern fit foodie May 4, 2012 at 9:31 pm

The coolest places I’ve ever been would have to be St. Lucia (honeymoon) and Virgin Gorda (in the British Virgin Islands). Both are gorgeous and so serene.

I agree that I need to travel to more U.S. states!

43 Michelle (Better with Berries) May 4, 2012 at 9:35 pm

Now I NEED a pretzel and some beer! I’ll have to make that happen this weekend.

I agree with lots of the places you want to go! Chicago and places to hike are on the top of my list.

44 Sara @ Nourish and Flourish May 5, 2012 at 2:38 am

I think #10 on your list should be #1. ;)

Have a wonderful time in Boulder!! I have no doubt it will be a blast, especially because you’ll be hanging out with a group of amazing women. Take lots of pictures, give lots of hugs, laugh, rest, and soak it all in. I went to a wedding at Chautauqua a few years ago, and was blown away by the natural beauty–you’re going to love it. :) I really wish I could have joined in on the fun, but feel lucky I get to “experience” everything through your recaps. :) <3

Favorite place I've traveled: South Africa and the Swiss Alps (tie). Place I'd love to go: Rome!

45 Bri Carpenter May 5, 2012 at 7:55 am

Have a great weekend in Colorado! I’m originally from Ontario, Canada but am currently living in Sydney, Aus. because I married an aussie. Australia is really great…I’ve honestly never seen beaches as beautiful and skies as big. Every time I’m at the beach I can’t help but think how small I am and how BIG God is! If you ever make it to oz and we’re still living here let me know!

46 Bethany @ Accidental Intentions May 5, 2012 at 4:13 pm

Have a fantastic time in Colorado! It’s such a beautiful state. Also, totally can’t wait for you to run Chicago, because I know for a fact that I’m going to be working at the race, and you better believe if I see you I’ll cheer my face off :)

I’ve done a lot of U.S. traveling (33 states, including my home state), but not a whole lot of international travel. I’d really like to go to New England because that’s one corner of the United States I’ve never been to, and I’d really like to go to the Caribbean. My sister and I have talked about backpacking through Europe–my mom and one of her sisters did that–which would be a pretty awesome experience, I think. I

47 Anna@ActiveFingers May 5, 2012 at 9:15 pm

I would love to travel to Korea and New Zealand. Other than a few mission trips across the border in Mexico, the only place outside of the states I have been to is Poland and I would love to go back. I have traveled to California a few times and really enjoyed the atmosphere.

48 Coco May 5, 2012 at 10:06 pm

I LOVE Boulder. Those mountains are GORGEOUS! I could stand there and look at them all day — but then I’d miss out on all the cute stores ….

49 Arlene @ Adventures in Weight Loss May 6, 2012 at 3:00 am

Have a great time.

If you make it to the Grand Canyon, look me up. I’m in Flagstaff, a short drive away. (Flagstaff is sometimes known as “Gateway to the Grand Canyon.”

50 Annie @ What's Annie Making? May 6, 2012 at 3:17 pm

I loved going to Madrid, Spain! I would love to get to Italy, Greece and northern California at some point.

51 Parita @ myinnershakti May 7, 2012 at 7:40 am

When you make it down to Miami, let me know!! I really want to travel more internationally. I’m hoping that if nothing else, Vishnu and I can go somewhere exotic for our honeymoon. We shall see!
