This Is Just Too Cool

by tinareale on July 24, 2012

I have something SERIOUSLY cool to share with you all today! If you’re a…

  • runner
  • fitness enthusiast
  • someone who likes snazzy workout shoes
  • someone who likes customized gear
  • or someone who just has way too much fun with any sort of #fitgear

…then you have got to check this out!

Nike has a cool little tool that allows you to create customized workout and running shoes – from the color to the level of cushioning to the personal touch on the shoe tongues. You get to choose a variety of the features for a shoe that matches your personality.

As you may recall, I have had some running issues in recent months and, as it turns out, my previous running shoes played a role in some of those mild injuries. There is such a thing as too much stability and apparently I had discovered it. Or, more accurately, my IT Band discovered it and then let me know about it loud and clear.

I have since been on the search for shoes that fit my needs (neutral to give me just enough stability when coupled with my use of insoles). So, I of course loved the thought of creating a pair completely to my liking. I think I put together like 3 or 4 different designs before finally settling on the one I’m about to share with you. I had a little inspiration to get me started:

Something bright to go with my fixation on bright colored running gear and racing skirts.

Something to give me strength as I battle through a tough run or challenging workout.

Something that makes me feel like I’m running on clouds (to keep my running form lighter on my feet – visualization works, right?).

Something different to stand out and reflect my excitement for fitness!

And that’s how I ended up with these

Do you like? I sure do!

Through Glam Media, I got to customize a pair of the Nike LungarGlide shoes to my liking. The shoes themselves offer the following features:

  • lightweight
  • responsive, yet cushioned (even get to pick which you want more of – responsiveness or cushioning)
  • flywire lacing system for adaptive fit (I’m loving the sound of this with my top of foot issues)
  • dynamic support for optimal stability

Then, the NIKEiD gives even more features. For over 10 years, NIKEiD offers consumers options
to customize a myriad of Nike products. I had the chance to use the NIKEiD customization for  my own personalized LunarGlides.

First up, I got to choose the color of the shoe – either one solid color, or a multi-color fade for a bolder look. Obviously, I went with the two toned fade in Volt and Blue Glow.

And kept the yellow theme going by choosing the Volt for my inner sleeve to show through the mesh upper layer as well. From there, I continued picking out colors – including the colors of the dynamic flywire (Stealth gray), the Nike swoosh (Volt yellow), and the laces (Blue Glow). I balanced out the bright colors with the grey and a light blue for the midsole of the shoe, which gives it an even more unique look.

Even cooler to me is the preference option for a responsive or cushioned midsole. Suh-weet!

Yet as wonderful as ALL those things are, I really really got excited about the final iD option. You could go with a traditional Nike logo…or pick your own.

I can have one of my most motivating mantras riding along with me no matter where I take these shoes. I’m hoping they work wonders and become a perfect running fit, but if not I know I will get plenty of use out of them in the gym or around town. Oh, I can’t wait to try them out!

Your Turn – What types of colors, ID, or features would you choose for custom shoes?

NIKEiD is the ultimate customization experience and allows our consumers to take their unique inspiration and express it within our Nike product, which results in a perfect intersection: personalized looks on the best performance athletic performance gear in the world.

Very cool. I’ve never been able to wear Nike’s unfortunately. But maybe if they could be customized. I really believe that the right shoe is so important.

Agreed. I’m not sure how they will work with running, but apparently the other ones I used to love are bad for me. Now I’m having to start from scratch, so hopefully these will work. If not, I still basically live in tennis shoes so that works either way. :)

I just have to give a “heck yes!” to the living in tennis shoes thing! ;-)

4 Alex @ therunwithin July 24, 2012 at 8:58 am

Whoa this is seriously awesome! I need to check this out.

5 Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots July 24, 2012 at 9:06 am

your shoes are seriously awesome!! I love the colors you chose! P.s. my legs are burning from bootcamp today, I love it!

6 Paige @ Your Trainer Paige July 24, 2012 at 9:26 am

Those are feakin’ awesome!! Peter will have no trouble spotting you after a race! :)

7 Emily N July 24, 2012 at 9:27 am

I play on that site seriously ALL THE TIME. LOVE IT!

8 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) July 24, 2012 at 9:29 am

I need to check that out! I need a pair of cross trainers since I already have a pair of runners! I’m with you, I need light weight and stability. Super cute shoes!

Those are some seriously cool shoes!! How much would they cost if you don’t mind me asking? I’m in the market for a new pair (my current ones have over 2000km on them) but I don’t have a lot of money (hence why my shoes have so many clicks on them.

I think the originals without the customization are around $100, but with the iD it’s $149?? So it is pricey but not too far off what most quality training shoes are for the originals.

I love these!! I would go with a green and blue color combo.

12 Calee July 24, 2012 at 10:21 am

I wonder if this is Nike’s way of winning runners back? I used to wear their shoes and they would fall apart really fast, so I quit wearing them and switched to ASICS.

I’m going to check this out. I’d have to have shoes that came in wide, and definitely would have to have some hot pink on them. ;)

13 Bethany @ Accidental Intentions July 24, 2012 at 10:43 am

Oh my gosh, those are the coolest shoes EVER! I would have the hardest time deciding what to put on my shoes. I’d probably go with blue and orange shoes, or purple and yellow shoes, since those are former school colors for me. One shoe of each? Hahaha.

14 Maria July 24, 2012 at 10:59 am

I love the way you customized them – such a great idea and great little reminder. I’m a Nike Free fan through and through. If they ever change too much or get rid of them, I honestly don’t know what I’ll do :) So yes, I know how it feels to be in love with a shoe.

15 Allison @ Running Through Red Lights July 24, 2012 at 11:21 am

I’ve been running in LunarGlides and LunarEclipses for a couple of years now, and I love them! They do offer the perfect amount of support and cushion, and the awesome color combinations are a major plus!

I have spent so many afternoons customizing ID’s–I wish I had an endless supply of money to buy them all, but I will wait for a special occasion or birthday/Christmas to get a pair.

16 Heather (Heather's Dish) July 24, 2012 at 11:47 am

oooooh, super fancy! i like :) i especially love the verse on the tongues…talk about motivation!

17 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More July 24, 2012 at 12:05 pm

Those shoes are awesome and being able to create your own is amazing! I love Nike shoes so much! I just ordered a new pair of Nike Free Runs and just love how a new pair of shoes can motivate you to take the next step in your workouts. :)

18 Cheryl @ Happy is the new healthy July 24, 2012 at 12:15 pm

THOSE are pretty sweet! I think I would go with as much neon as possible (lime green and hot pink and bright purple, I think). I think workout clothes and shoes should be fun!

19 jobo July 24, 2012 at 1:05 pm

This is awesome!! I am so intrigued. Love the colors you chose ;-) and definitely want to check these out! How is your foot doing?

20 Brittany @ Delights and Delectables July 24, 2012 at 1:08 pm

I love these! I’m in the market for some new shoes, so I need to check these out!

21 Heather @ Better With Veggies July 24, 2012 at 2:28 pm

How cool!! I used to use these shoes for my short-distance runs, but when i added trail shoes to my closet, I stopped getting these too. They are great for my running style though!

I love your design, very cool and they’ll really stand out. I’ve gone from being annoyed when the obnoxious shoes fit me best to excited – it’s like you’re a REAL runner when you wear LOUD shoes. :)

22 Tempie (The Texas Peach) July 24, 2012 at 3:49 pm

Cool looking shoes, and I love the verse that you chose. That verse kept running through my head when I ran my 15K race last year, and it really does help keep you going!

23 Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy July 24, 2012 at 4:07 pm

how cool! i love nike:) and those are seriously awesome kicks!

24 Lindsay @ In Sweetness and In Health July 24, 2012 at 4:34 pm

I got to do this too!!! I made mine after my wedding colors :) . Your shoes look great!

25 Julia H. @ Going Gulia July 24, 2012 at 5:16 pm

SWEET shoes! That’s such a neat idea to be able to customize. I don’t know if I’d try it out because I’ve finally found a pair of (non-Nike) running shoes that keep me from getting injured, but maybe someday I’ll give it a shot.

26 Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut July 24, 2012 at 5:21 pm

Wow this is so awesome! ((Holding back my jealousy))

I have been told that I need a lot of support while running. I am also a size “narrow” so I’ve only been able to do asics..I wonder if they have narrows?

You will have to let us know how they work with your running!

27 Coco July 24, 2012 at 9:31 pm

Very cool! And I love the hot colors you picked! I think they would like great with my favorite running skirt ….

28 Vicki July 24, 2012 at 10:51 pm

Love them!

29 maria @ mim July 25, 2012 at 3:23 am

Very cool! Very, very cool!
