Which Would You Choose?

Recently Courtney shared a fun post with a  “This or That” type of fitness survey. I don’t know about you, but after having a sick kid since last Friday, I could go for some fun today and this fits perfectly. So, I’ll share my answers and then hopefully you’ll share your answers in the comments below! Smile

1. Run/workout in the heat and humidity or freezing temps and snow?

FREEZING TEMPS! I find it much easier to layer up for running than to cool down. Then again, I live in the South so snow is never really an issue. That could very well change my opinion between the two.

2. Have washboard abs or flat abs?

Flat abs because it’s much more realistic…and healthy is better in my opinion anyways I have previously made my thoughts on washboard ab goals well known.

3. Dr. Oz or The Doctors?

Definitely The Doctors! They always have such interesting topics with useful, reputable information.

4. Cardio or strength?

This is like having to choose between my first and second child. Strength training and I go way back and it is my first fitness love…but running is cardio and it gives me a workout endorphin rush like no other. I guess I will have to go with the running. Or I always like a good mix of both, you know. Winking smile 

5. Cravings: Protein or carbs?

I enjoy both…but carbs. Hands down. Give me my oatmeal!

6. Jillian Michaels or Bob Harper?

I’ve only done Jillian’s workouts and I really enjoy them, so I will say her. I also always preferred her tough love style over Bob’s on The Biggest Loser.

7. Frozen Yogurt or Ice Cream?

Frozen Yogurt if we’re talking a self serve option. I like getting to choose a mix of flavors and toppings. Oh, buddy, do I! No shame that I go for the chocolate over the fruit toppings.

8. To train: Upper body or Lower body?

Full Body. I really prefer full body workouts. Between upper and lower though, I guess I would have to say I like lower body moves more. That shocks me since I have always thought I hated leg day at the gym!

9. Protein powder or food with protein?

FOOD! While I do use protein powder (about 1/2 scoop in my smoothies), I would much rather eat a natural option for my protein consumption. Eggs, beans, yogurt = my favorites! Want to know more about protein? Check out my Why Protein Matters post!

10. Lunges or squats?

Lunges because there are so many variations – front, side, curtsy, reverse, walking, backward walking! Oh, the list could go on and on!

11. Sweet or salty?

Do you know me at all? SWEET! I was blessed with my mama’s sweet tooth. And have apparently passed the gene on to my kiddos in full force.

12. Workout attire: cute or comfy?

Comfy. My workout attire is typically a pair of running shorts or plain capris plus a wicking tee. No lululemon here, friends. I like to think I at least look a little cute, though.

13. Body Pump or Heavy lifting?

Heavy lifting. I actually can’t stand Body Pump. Mainly because you can do so much more in the gym when not limited to mostly the same series of exercises class after class after class.

14. Yoga or Pilates?

Yoga because it involves many areas that perfectly complement running.

15. Nike or Adidas?

I have quite a bit of Nike stuff, so I have to go with Nike. And I’m anxiously awaiting my new Nike LunarGlides that I got to custom design!

16. Running on the treadmill or outdoors?

I would rather risk running in a storm than on that dang hamster wheel.

17. Whole Foods or Trader Joes?

Well, Kroger is honestly my favorite because a) deals and b) it always has some of my favorites on sale. Gotta get that Love Grown and Chobani!

Otherwise, Trader Joes, since I’m too cheap for Whole Foods and it’s too far away.

18. Summer or Winter Olympics?

I hate to admit that I rarely pay much attention to Winter Olympic games, but can’t get away from the Summer games. I just love the gymnastics, swimming, running, volleyball, diving…

19. Wine or beer?

I used to be way more of a wine girl, then I started running longer distances. I don’t quite know why…but when I run I crave beer something fierce. Now, I’m a big beer fan – especially a good craft beer on draft!

20. Steamed or roasted veggies?

Depends on the season, actually. I’m all about steamed during summer and roasted during the fall/winter.

This is a fun post. Like you, I prefer to incorporate BOTH cardio and strength together. And LOVE Jillian Michael’s tough love, too.

I’m a total Olympics junkie- I grew up watching them, and probably get into all of the sports, but I think I do like the summer more than the winter. Although I like Whole Foods, the products there are just so expensive, so I tend to get more at Trader Joe’s. I love their Margarita pizza.

I am so glad you said protein with food! Me too! I don’t mind powders but I think too many people assume that PT’s live off of protein powder and supplements which isn’t the case.

-Protein in my food but like you I add powder to smoothies.

-Trader Joe’s – we are finally getting one in our town in 1 month. I’ll no longer have to drive an hour for the nearest one. Woohooo!

Fun post. I agree on the cardio vs weights. So tough b/c they’re such different workouts and I have a soft spot for both. Roasted veggies all the way (or grilled). And I would have said squats first but then your reasoning for lunges makes perfect sense.

LOVE this post! I will need to do one and link back to you and Courtney! Especially since I too have had sick kids and sometimes you just need some fun writing.

I would much rather run in the cold…and it gets to -40 here in the winter, sometimes colder so that should tell you how much I dislike running in the heat/humidity (we get to over 100 with the humidity in the summer…I live in the extremes of the prairies…we get about 3 months of ideal running weather per year!!)

I am such a salt eater that I so rarely touch frozen yogurt or ice cream. I just don’t crave it!

I’m a Jillian girl … I love Bob, but I love him WITH Jillian.

And I’m a salty girl! Although, I can overdo and then need something sweet to “balance it out” ;)

I always crave a good craft beer after I run long distances… it doesn’t even matter what time it is when I finish, a beer is just what I want. And then an ice bath. And then a nap. :)

I prefer running in the cold to the hot… you can always put more on, but you can only take so much off. I crave sweets more than salty and love carbs too much. All things I am working on. Plus I am a cardio addict, but learning to add in strength stuff/

Anyway, I definitely say NIKE! Such amazing products that really power me and I think a great company too. And YOGA! I must consistently practice to help keep my sanity. ;)

What a great idea for a post! See, I’d so much rather run in hot temps…and I can’t believe I am saying that! but since there are so few months here where it is truly hot, and WAY more cold months, I try to embrace it :-) I also love the summer olympics more! And Trader Joe’s over Whole Foods, though Whole Foods has a great meat and fish section and lots of goodies, just pricier ;-)

definitely flat abs because the super strict diet for washboards just ain’t happening around here!

and i have to say that although Jillian’s workouts are good and everything, i HAAAAAAAATE how she hardly does them and spends her time repeating herself a billion times. Bob seems like the kind of trainer who can actually DO the things he makes you do!

Cold temps for me too, you can always layer clothes, but there’s only so much I can take off to cool down :)

Amen! I’ve always felt like there was something special about Body Pump that I was missing…but nah. I was just bored in the classes :)

We have some good local breweries and places with lots of beer on tap. Although we don’t go to them near enough!

After the brutally hot and humid summer we’ve had, I would much rather run in the cold, even in Wisconsin! I can always add layers, but I can only strip down so far.

I agree, comfy over cute, though I like to try to coordinate with what I’ve got. I love your no Lululemon comment–I’m the same way!

I will always choose squats over lunges.

I’ve seen a couple people do this survey, and you’re one of the few who seem to prefer freezing workouts. I’m completely with you on that. This summer had taught me that!

Love all your answers. I am MUCH more a sweet girl over savoury. I could make every meal and snack sweet and be happily content for the day!

I can’t stand beer…so basically I should try upping my running distances and seeing if that gives me a taste for it? Sounds like an interesting experiment, don’t you think?

I like weight lifting more than cardio now :) ANd also, I am more salty than sweet now too. It’s kinda odd and funny b/c I love my ice cream, but usually I crave salt.

LOVE THIS POST!!! We have so freaking much in common its ridic! I agree that the colder temps are way easier to run in — I can run so much further/longer/harder when its cold outside versus crazy hot days where I just want to lay on the pavement and cry. Hence why you wont find me running until the fall… its not cute lying in the middle of your street whimpering. [or so i've been told..] :)

I’m with ya on flat abs and lunges too. squats killlllll my knees!

Okay, I love you but WHOA on the hating on Bodypump! BP is amazing- and being an instructor has made so many positive changes in my life! If you do it right- and challenge yourself it can be the most amazing full body, sweat-inducing workout! It’s a great PART of my weekly routine (I teach it 3x a week) combined with several other types of workouts. People who don’t sweat in Bodypump just aren’t challenging themselves enough!
You should totally check out Bob’s Inside Out Method DVD series (you can get like 4 of them for $20 on his site). He is KILLER. I have his DVDs and Jill’s- and he makes her workouts seem like a warm up!

This is such a fun post. I definitely prefer run/workout in the cold, flat abs, carb cravings, upper body training, yoga…and roasted veggies! I’m curious to check out both Jillian’s and Bob’s DVDs.

So fun! I was thinking of doing a similar blog post soon, too! I’m a cardio girl all the way, but am getting better at s/t and learning to enjoy it more. I think carbs go hand in hand with all that running! Love my oatmeal, too!

Haha, I practically cringed at that first question. Where I live, it’s VERY humid (and hot) during the summer, and I’ve been having to get up at 6 am to run just to run in slightly less hot weather (it’s still not even that nice at 6 am!). But I go to school in one of the snowiest places in NY, so the idea of running in the heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures is painful to me. No idea which I would choose!

Cold weather definitely preferred over hot weather, even if snow is involved! Unless it’s a downright blizzard, but there are only a few people crazy enough to run in blizzards (and I may or may not be one of them!). Excited to be able to do your style of cold weather running this winter though in Florida!
