Scenes from the Week: Things I’m Loving These Days

Goooood morning!!! How are we this fine morning? I gotta say that I’m doing pretty dang well. It was a good week. Nothing too special…just filled with lots of love and days focusing on the little blessings in life. One of the *biggest* blessings (as Lindsay knows and shares) comes in these small packages.

Or I guess you could say they come in big packages. They keep growing up! Gosh, I love those guys! Little boys will absolutely steal your heart. And little girls will make you swell with joy watching them grow and want to be just like you. <—- That’s motivation to watch how I live, right there!

In addition to loving my time with my family, this past week I have also really loved spending time in fellowship with friends. The two small groups I am part of started up this past week and it felt wonderful to reconnect. I can’t wait to grow closer with everyone! I also look forward to more potluck dinners. Winking smile

Speaking of good food….

Almond Coconut Kind bars and Chocolate PB2 in my smoothies have quickly joined my regular snack rotation. I nabbed those two babies off the Swanson Vitamins website. That place is a gold mine! I received an offer for a promo code for $20 worth of product and had such a hard time deciding what to get. They have everything from a huge selection of vitamins and health food related products to natural bath/beauty products and  eco-friendly cleaners. All that with guaranteed low prices and great customer service. I’ve shopped there before this deal and I’ll be back to shopping there again, for sure. Even if just for those Kind bars (they were about $1/bar when they’re normally twice that in stores!).

Yet another thing I’m loving this week?

Did you even need a second guess after my earlier announcement this week? I have still been feeling pretty dang good on my runs. Hit 7 miles of hills on Wednesday to get ready for the hills I’ll be facing at the Runner’s World Half Marathon (don’t forget the code BLOGGER36 for a 10% discount on all races). Hills never felt so good!

Balancing out muscle imbalances, foam rolling, icing, and doing what works for me have certainly helped a lot. Switching shoes has also helped a lot. I’ve had a few questions about my shoe changes from people who have dealt with similar issues, so I’ll do a quick recap. For those who don’t give a rat’s patooty – scroll on down. I get it.

The Drama of the Running Shoes

  • Ran in New Balance 890s and Saucony Rides with no problem for over a year.
  • Got fitted for shoes…was put in Saucony Guides with a Superfeet insole.
  • 3 months in = needed a new pair and had foot pain. They redesigned the shoe to a lower heel drop and I didn’t think I should risk that change during my peak mileage of marathon training.
  • Went with something I thought was similar – Mizuno Wave Inspire 8s. Loved them for awhile…but then…
  • Too. Much. Stability! Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. PAIN.
  • On a quest to find the right shoe and tried on a million but nothing felt right.

When I received the chance to custom design a pair of Nike LungarGlides through the myNIKEiD program, I really liked some of the specs of the shoe, so I actually bought my own pair to start running in while waiting the month+ time for the custom pair. The neon yellow shoes in the above picture would be the pair I bought. They worked GREAT and were the first pair I could run in pain free. So, that’s what I’ve been wearing now.

I also finally received the custom pair. Look how SNAZZY! I LOVE how they look!


Unfortunately, despite being the same shoe, they seem to fit a bit tighter in the toes and that really makes my foot pain flare up. They work wonderfully on shorter runs, but as my feet expand on longer runs they haven’t been the most comfortable. Being honest! I still think the iD process is totally cool and love the other LunarGlides for my feet right now, but if you have finicky feet like I do, then you may want to make sure to not order shoes online so you can ensure a good fit.

What I Learned for MY Feet

  • My feet did fine for over a year in neutral shoes. I think the support and stability weakened my feet, so I want to strengthen them back up. I’m actually considering gradually training into shoes with a lower heel to toe drop and more neutral. I don’t think I’ll ever go full on barefoot or Vibram running, since I love longer distances too much, but I DO want to strengthen my feet.

  • Wide Toe Box!!! I have realized just how much of a NEED this is for me. I had no clue how much this mattered in running shoes until recently. I apparently have wide feet but a narrow heel – tough to find a good fitting shoe!
  • Cushion. My feet are most happy with a bit of cushion instead of a super firm ride.

Now to just find the dream shoe! The LunarGlides are good for now, but I still plan to keep looking as I eventually want to be able to run in a bit more neutral/minimal (with some cushion) shoes. Whew!

My last thing I’m loving…myself.

Side Note: I’m loving this Under Armour sports bra too. It’s quickly become my go to for training. A lot of great features like other bras I love, but fits a bit better because it’s sized by bra size and it’s easier to find in stores – usually for cheaper than online. End side note.

I don’t say that in a cocky “oh-look-at-me” way. I am nowhere near perfect. But I do believe in acknowledging my worth in this world as a person (God made me for a purpose) AND appreciating my body instead of tearing it down. I love my body for what it can DO these days over what it LOOKS like. Be strong. Be confident!

This week I am so thankful that I didn’t manage to loose my cool when things got a bit overwhelming. I wanted to crawl under a rock at one point but I chose to walk away and right into a Starbucks instead. Nothing a pumpkin latte can’t fix! :) Have a great weekend love!

Love love love that first picture. And love that you love yourself. So important isn’t it yet sometimes so hard. Really hope the new shoes treat your feet better. I’m a neutral shoe girl all the way and I actually prefer less cushion, which sounds weird I’m sure.

I’m glad you went into detail with the shoe dilema you’ve faced, I was so curious how you liked the nikes?!? As I said before i’m facing the SAME issues, did my half in mizuno inspire 8″s they got me through, but afterwards I started having issues. I just bought the asics nimbus, but sending them back rubbed my foot wrong (too narrow of a toe box). Ughhh, so I currently have 2 different shoes on their way. Praying that I find something soon that my feet love, and the same for you! You look great!!! I love how positive you are, even on the small things in life, and know how blessed you are. :)

You are rocking the UA bra!

Yes to strengthening your feet! The easiest way is to simply spend all your waking moments that you can in your barefeet, including outside. People will stare, but so what? Also do single leg stances in your bare feet. This gets all the stabilizing muscles working.

As for shoes–look at the Brooks Pure line–so many people have been really happy with these as an intro to less shoe. Good luck with it!

I’ve been really looking at the Brooks PureFlow and also back to the Saucony Rides since I know I can’t jump down to the 4 mm and more minimal so the Saucony could be good for transitioning.

I walk around barefoot a lot lately because of that very reason you mentioned! Thanks for the tips and support, Amanda!

You are strong and beautiful! And good luck with the shoe hunt – it amazes me how difficult it can be to find a good pair of shoes and how different each foot actually is. I too have super thin heels but I also have major knee issues that require more support. Mizunos were my favorite until I tried the Nike Frees and now I think they’re my new favorites. They’re so light and comfortable!

What a shoe journey you’ve been on, man. Makes me thankful that I found some that really work for me. Isn’t it funny how too much of a good thing – stability, in your case, and for me, a higher arch support – can sometimes do the opposite? I had a pair fitted for me that were for higher arches, and while my arches are a bit higher, I never felt I needed the support there, but I went with it. But it was not right at all! Pushed my feet forward too much and hello shin splints! So I totally agree with you in finding the right pair that works for you, of course! And I love love love the pics of the kiddies, they are adorable, and that pic of you that you posted to instagram? hot! So proud! own it! I love it! We DO need to embrace our bodies!

I just discovered those UA bras & I’m loving them! I’d been using some old Nike ones from 1998 & they were pretty much falling apart. I’d tried other ones over the years & never found any that I loved as much. I bought 3 UA bras & my only complaint is the padding slides around during washing- I’ve just taken it out of several of them when I was too lazy to fix it. I haven’t noticed that…probably because I removed the padding first thing after getting the bra. I even forgot it originally came with it! Haha!

Your feet sound EXACTLY like mine! Only instead of foot pain, I get knee pain and mega blisters. I’m in the process of looking for that perfect shoe that combines cushion for my knees with a wide toe box for my duck feet but enough support for my little bony ankles. I’ve got a pair that works for short but not long runs and the pair that for some reason worked magic for me is in dire need of replacement (and the new version has added features that don’t agree with my feet at all). I’m normally an Asics girl but I may have to branch out to find something that works.
Good luck at the RW half! I’m running a local half that weekend too (at a much slower pace than you ;P )

girl. we are foot twins. did you watch my vlog yesterday? i am having the same issue with the wide toe box, but need for cushion and not as stable, I JUST ordered the asics gel nimbus yesterday! neutral, cushion, roomy at toes but snug(ish) heel (or so they say) something to consider. has a 90 return policy even if you have worn/used the shoes, they will give you a store credit.

Be sure to let me know how you like them. I actually am looking at aiming to incorporate the Brooks PureFlow slowly and maybe going back to the Saucony Rides in the transition now that I’m not doing as much mileage and could probably handle the changes now. Maybe still using the Lunarglides on longer runs…but I really want to get down to less of the support because I think that is what has caused all these issues. Stinks that it has to be such a process to do that, though.

It has been really encouraging to read how open you are with your running shoe struggle, I have been going through the same shoe crisis myself. Have you ever looked at Altra running shoes? They have been the answer to my issues.

I have! Never found them in a store to try on, though. Crazy enough, they will be at the RW Half so I’m hoping to give them a try then. Although I know regardless I would have to be patient with easing into them. they sound like a great shoe though for my needs after I can get adapted to the lower heel drop running. Thanks for the feecback on them, though because I’ve been wondering a lot about them.

I had a similar shoe issue. I was wearing neutral then was advised to switch to mild stability which gave me an injury. I switched back to neutral, and I have been fine since. I also got arch supports from a podiatrist. Brooks have good wide toe boxes for me, and I always buy my shoes pretty big.

LOVE those Nikes. Super cute. And as far as our foot/stride issues go..I think we’re foot twins! Except, well, my pain is my my right hip.

I absolutely love the UA bar. I also really like Champions bras – a particular one but I can’t remember what it’s called. I’ve talked about it before on the blog, though. However, the UA fits a bit better since you buy by bra size instead of S/M/L and is a bit more comfy for that reason.

I may need to try that sports bra, I’m always looking for better ones since I currently wear two when running. Also, thanks for opening my eyes to all the potential foot issues, I basically just pick ones that feel fine and then suck it up. Probably not a great idea especially since I put some mileage on those bad boys.
Good for you for being proud of yourself! People don’t and aren’t encouraged enough to give themselves credit where it’s due.

You should try out the brooks pure connect. They’re a neutral minimalist shoe. They hug the foot pretty well, but not too much (at least not mine). I dont know if I have a wide toe box, but I definitely have a narrow heel like you (but maybe I do have a wider toe box because my usual problem is that the top of my foot loses circulation). The pure connections have been GREAT for me. I love them. They have cushion, but not much of a heel, and hug my arch. Love them!

I’m looked at the PureFlow actually but will have to transition into them with the lower heel drop. I heard great things about the connects but a lot of reviews mentioned it being more narrow and less cushioned than the flows…so those sound like they may be a better fit for me. Glad to hear you like that line though. I’ve never really tried Brooks so it will be interesting to see.

I use it mostly in smoothies and then maybe adding it to greek yogurt. It has a good peanut butter flavor but is in NO WAY in my opinion a sub for the stuff. I still use regular peanut butter to top my oatmeal, for example. Basically I use it as a flavor addition and not a pb sub. I do like it, though!
