Move It Monday: Commercial Break Challenge

by tinareale on October 1, 2012

Fall is in the air. And new shows are filling up the DVR. Do you relate?

Fall is in the air. And schedules are filling up our planners between tailgating, school, work, kid activities, and everything in between. Do you relate?

Fall is in the air. And you just want to crash on the couch at the end of a busy, schedule-filled day to zone out with said DVR while getting lost in some form of pumpkin baked good. Do you relate?

That’s where I come in. If you missed that morning workout and just can’t pull yourself away from the television and couch at night, then this little workout will give you a burst of activity that can easily fit into your day. And the more you watch…the more exercise you get. Plus, it’s fun since you will try to beat your results with each set of commercials that comes on. Ready, set, go!

PS – No using that fast forward button. I know you were thinking it. Winking smile

Your Turn – Have you ever used commercial breaks or other short breaks in your day for short bursts of activity? What are your 2-3 favorite shows on television? Mine are Criminal Minds, Glee, and Modern Family.

I do this a lot.
it’s all about fitting in fitness here :-)

2 Cat @ Breakfast to Bed October 1, 2012 at 12:23 pm

yup. Though, never ever ever burpees.

3 Glenneth October 1, 2012 at 6:12 am

I love Hawaii Five-O, Castle, and Bones. Can’t wait to try these commercial workouts!

4 Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio October 1, 2012 at 6:41 am

I do this a lot too. My routine is to speed walk during Grey’s Anatomy and run during its commercials.

Great idea! Fantastic Monday motivation! The only time I watch TV is when I’m on the treadmill :)

LOVE!!! I am a tv watcher for sure in the fall when all of the new shoes (not going to correct that because it’s funny – I mean shows!) come out!

7 Kelly October 1, 2012 at 7:36 am

You have to watch Parenthood! It’s my absolutely favorite show. I also settle in for The Office and I’m trying out the new Revolution.

8 tinareale October 2, 2012 at 7:04 am

I forgot about Parenthood!! I love that show too. I need to remember to start DVR’ing it again.

9 Lee October 1, 2012 at 8:06 am

Parenthood and Modern Family are mine.

10 Lauren October 1, 2012 at 8:08 am

Haha, I always commend people that can burst out push-ups during late night sitcoms. ;) By the time I actually sit down at night, this body is done for the day. But I love the idea! :)

11 Parita @ myinnershakti October 1, 2012 at 8:39 am

Love this! I did something similar last Wednesday while watching The Middle and Modern Family. I think commercial breaks are the best time to fit in a little movement. Great idea, Tina!

12 Julie @ Sweetly Balanced October 1, 2012 at 8:59 am

I love this!! Great way to keep busy during commercial breaks and perfect timing with all of the new fall shows starting up again! :)

13 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats October 1, 2012 at 9:06 am

I always think these are great ideas but I never seem to do it! I Gould print it out and put it at my desk so indon’t forget!

14 misszippy October 1, 2012 at 9:30 am

Great way to get it in! Love short, effective workouts like this.

Modern Family all the way–wasn’t last week’s one of the best?!

15 Michele @ Nycrunningmama October 1, 2012 at 12:52 pm

LOVE Modern Family!!!! =)

16 Christine @ Love, Life, Surf October 1, 2012 at 9:36 am

I used to do planks during commercial breaks and maybe some push-ups but I never really pushed myself. I will have to remember this tonight!

17 Tamara October 1, 2012 at 9:52 am

I give this tip to clients a lot (not sure if they follow it though!)
My favourite shows? Glee (I’m a total Gleek!) and Parenthood (it makes me feel like my life is not unique…)

18 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More October 1, 2012 at 9:59 am

Such a great idea! And while I’m *usually* able to get myself to the gym, I still find myself spending too much time in front of the TV. It’d be nice to get my butt up off the couch and utilize those commercial breaks in some way!

19 Brittany @Berries and Barbells October 1, 2012 at 12:45 pm

I have never used commercial breaks to workout (except for kegels after I had a baby!).

My favorite shows right now are Modern Family, Vampire Diaries, and Greys Anatamy!

20 Michele @ Nycrunningmama October 1, 2012 at 12:54 pm

I love this idea. I find that I watch SO much TV in the fall. Between baseball playoffs (go yanks!) to football to all the new seasons (huge fan of Greys, Top Chef, the Office and Modern Family), I am in front of the TV more than I would like to admit. Definitely going to give this a try =)

21 Jentry Nielsen October 1, 2012 at 1:09 pm

I love this! I have fallen into the trap of fall television already, so many good shows starting up it’s addicting! ha This is the perfect accommodation! Love it, looks like a great workout as well! Thanks for sharing!!! :)

22 Brittany (Healthy Slice of Life) October 1, 2012 at 3:34 pm

Love little challenges like this one! Makes me remember to squeeze in fitness wherever I can :)

23 Iris October 1, 2012 at 4:33 pm

I love doing wall sits during commercial breaks! I always try to hold it for the duration of the commercial, but the commercial breaks get longer and longer! Haha.

24 tinareale October 2, 2012 at 7:05 am

That’s a good one!

25 [email protected] October 1, 2012 at 4:54 pm

Love it! I do stability ball pikes –fun!!

26 Sam @ Better With Sprinkles October 1, 2012 at 5:38 pm

Wish I could apply this idea, but unfortunately I am cable-less!

Favourite shows: Game of Thrones, How I Met Your Mother and Walking Dead.

27 glt October 1, 2012 at 5:46 pm

I love Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and Sherlock. Going to try watching the US version of Sherlock, Elementary – starring Lucy Liu. I also love food shows like Top Chef Masters, Master Chef and Eat Street! Oh and Top Secret Recipe!

Did the commercial break workout to the season 9 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy. Instead of doing the circuit during breaks, I did it every time there was a Dr. Mark Sloan (McSteamy) flashback. Ended up doing the circuit 4 times + 1 ab circuit.

28 tinareale October 2, 2012 at 7:06 am

Awesome! I’m so glad you tried it. And I was so bummed that he died!

29 Brittany @ Delights and Delectables October 1, 2012 at 8:35 pm

Love this!! I am turning into a tv watcher since it is getting dark and colder out! I love Criminal Minds too!! And Bones!

30 Purely Michelle October 1, 2012 at 10:09 pm

I need to stop doing work while watching TV and exercise more :) love this

31 Meredith @ DareYouTo October 2, 2012 at 4:53 pm

Love this idea! I do try to move a bit during commercials instead of just sitting around. Great chance to sneak in activity, and with intention!

32 Leonor @FoodFaithFitness October 3, 2012 at 10:48 am

I wish I could zone out in front of the TV. We have somethign going on every night this week! Sadly, this is our life for the next month.

33 Patty October 4, 2012 at 9:09 am

I am so going to use this during my favorite shows! :)
