Scenes from the Week

by tinareale on October 19, 2012

Well, hello and good morning to you! Even though I’m off (literally) running around Bethlehem, PA for the Runner’s World Half Marathon and Festival, I couldn’t leave you hanging without some scenes from the week today. What would Friday be without it?! You wouldn’t survive. I know it. Humor me, okay? So, without further ado…

I have recently decided that the 20-30 minute drive is well worth doing my grocery shopping at Trader Joes. They have quality (and delicious!) stuff for even cheaper sometimes than my local store. Plus, it’s fun! And they always have free samples.

Weekday lunch date with the family! Peter raved about this little sandwich shop close to his work and said I had to come try it out. It was pretty delicious! I really loved my spinach salad with goat cheese, strawberries, oranges, balsamic vinaigrette, and pecan crisps.

New boots!! I actually bought these when in Chicago in a couple weeks ago. I didn’t realize how cold it was going to be this weekend and decided my little flats weren’t going to cut it. I would say I made a wise decisions because I found these boots for $50 and have certainly gotten my wear’s worth since then. Boots are so comfortable! #waitedtoolong

Remember when I brought a dinner to a friend after she had a baby? Well, she returned my pans with this special little surprise tucked inside. She knows how to say a good “thank you”! Thank you again, Laura! The family and I certainly have enjoyed them!

Leftovers are a girl’s best friend!

Remember that time my Garmin strap snapped into two pieces? Replacement straps were $20…and I’m cheap. One dollar velcro strap, you give Garmin a run for their money. Whoever gave me the idea to use standard velcro…THANK YOU!!!

That strap held up beautifully for this 4 mile run…as did my legs. I have no clue where that came from but it was one of those “perfect” runs where you just float along, carefree without feeling any effort at all. LOVE when that happens! Let’s see if that will happen on Sunday for the Runner’s World Half Marathon.

You see, I haven’t had a good race since….last fall. I enjoyed all the races and experiences and accomplishments, but I haven’t felt GOOD in a race since last fall. Nagging injuries or not knowing where I’m at physically have caused races to be a struggle for me since then. Now I have been completely injury free (outside of occasional tightness I have to watch) and training fine for 3 months. I learned where I’m at right now for pacing and race goals based on my 10K race on Labor Day. In other words, I’m feeling back in the running groove and excited to accomplish new goals.

What, then, are my goals for the #RWHalf this weekend?

Actually…my goal is simply to run feeling good. I don’t have a time goal and expect to run it at a slower and steadier pace than “racing” it. I’m doing this race purely for fun and so will just see where it takes me. I have zero thoughts of setting a PR or anything of that nature. I plan to soak in the race atmosphere and energy, then carry that with me into the beginning of training for my next marathon. So, here’s to a successful race weekend for me and a successful weekend (whatever that may be) for you, too!

Your Turn – Where is your favorite place to grocery shop? What are you hoping to accomplish this weekend?

Aaaand I’m so glad you realized how worth it going to TJ’s is!!

2 Lauren October 19, 2012 at 7:44 am

You’re in Bethlehem??? Not too far from me! Well, in the same state. :) Have a great time girl!

Have fun this weekend! I can’t wait to hear about how fun the race was;-) Those boots are awesome.

The only thing I am hoping to accomplish this weekend is spending a quality girls weekend w/my toddler, sister, mom and aunt. (And not to stress out about things, its been a rough couple weeks)

6 tinareale October 19, 2012 at 3:48 pm

I hope you have an incredible stress free weekend!!!

7 Lee October 19, 2012 at 8:17 am

I think that velcro sounds more comfortable than the garmin band. It always irritates my wrist.

I kind of shop at a bunch of grocery stores. If I’m in a hurry, or just being lazy, I’ll go to Kroger or Publix, but if I really want some interesting stuff I’ll go to TJ’s and sometimes in the Dekalb Farmers Market. I don’t generally grocery shop at WF, I more go there for lunches sometimes.

8 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats October 19, 2012 at 8:18 am

Trader joe’s is my favorite! Even though I love whole foods, at TJs I don’t cringe when I see my total!

9 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table October 19, 2012 at 8:42 am

I am partial to the Dekalb Farmer’s Market. It’s so cheap and they have such cool stuff.

Good luck this weekend!

10 Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona October 19, 2012 at 8:47 am

I hope you have a great race – good luck!

11 Heather (Heather's Dish) October 19, 2012 at 8:49 am

sigh. the sad thing about moving away from colorado is that i’ll have to wait EVEN LONGER for a trader joe’s to pop up around me. so jealous!

12 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More October 19, 2012 at 8:57 am

I am definitely a Trader Joe’s girl all the way. My weekend will consist of a lot of work so I’m hoping to at least get my NASM CPT reading done for the week so I can spend the rest of my week reviewing and studying.

13 Sarah @ Blonde Bostonian October 19, 2012 at 9:24 am

I am so jealous of your Runner’s World Half weekend! I can’t wait to hear all about it! I definitely a Trader Joe’s girl, but I tend to not go every week. I go maybe once a month to pick up the necessities that I can’t get anywhere else, like they’re awesome pumpkin butter!

14 tinareale October 19, 2012 at 3:49 pm

They’re pumpkin butter IS freaking amazing!

15 [email protected] October 19, 2012 at 9:29 am

Good luck this weekend!! I’m a Trader Joe’s fan. Cute boots!

16 Mellissa October 19, 2012 at 9:33 am

It’s a tie between Trader Joes and Costco. I love both!

17 Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots October 19, 2012 at 9:33 am

Trader joes is the best store, I only shop there! Good luck this weekend

18 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries October 19, 2012 at 9:49 am

I love grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s and would definitely do all of mine there if we had a TJ’s here in Utah. I shopped there all the time in college in CA and miss it so much! Supposedly we’re getting one soon though! Can’t wait! Aaaand I LOVE your boots! I’m actually in the market for some new riding boots… Where did you find those?!

19 tinareale October 19, 2012 at 3:50 pm

I found them at Payless! Score!

20 Alex @ therunwithin October 19, 2012 at 10:49 am

i adore those boots! i hope you rock the race this weekend, your tweets are making me jealous. wish i was running it.

21 Amanda Perry @ Sistas of Strength October 19, 2012 at 10:56 am

What’s funny is that I used to do all my shopping at our regular store (Hannafords) and go to Trader Joe’s for a few things. Now it’s the opposite and I usually just go to Trader Joes. I hate the produce, but can usually make it work. :)

22 Bethany @ Accidental Intentions October 19, 2012 at 11:05 am

I’m a HUGE Trader Joe’s fan. There’s a grocery store really close to my place, but I choose to go relatively out of my way to go to TJ’s every week. Their prices are so competitive, their food is so good, and I just love the overall atmosphere. I’m crazy about it. I do go to the close-to-me place once a week as well because some things are a little cheaper there, and I make it to Whole Foods about once a month, but Trader Joe’s is my first grocery love.

Have a great weekend in PA, and have a great race!

23 Heather @ Better With Veggies October 19, 2012 at 12:16 pm

You’re going to have so much fun this weekend and I’ll be praying you have the exact race you want! My new motto is Running IS fun – no matter how I’m feeling. ;)

24 Jentry Nielsen October 19, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Oh man I wish I lived in a city remotely close to Trader Joe’s, my closest one is an hour and a half away :( It’s devastating! ha

25 Brittany @Berries and Barbells October 19, 2012 at 1:05 pm

I LOVE Trader Joes with all my heart and have really missed it since we moved away from California!!

26 Yolanda October 19, 2012 at 1:30 pm

I’m like you, LOVE Trader Joe’s. We also have a local market that I love called Raisin Rack, here in Columbus, OH. They don’t always have the loweset prices, but they are selective about what they sell & I think local deserves priority when possible :)

27 allison October 19, 2012 at 2:11 pm

I would totally drive 30 miles to a Trader Joes! The closest one to me is opening soon an hour and a half away BUT it is on the way to my fiancé’s parents so I’m pretty psyched! And those boots are cute!! I love when it finally gets cold enough to wear boots. I am totally a boot hoarder, I have all types:):):)

28 [email protected] October 19, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Ahhhh TJs better come soon to SLC!! (I think in Nov, is when it’s supposed to open. I am DYING).

And that sandwich/salad looks amazing.

love me some good boots!

29 Amy Lauren October 19, 2012 at 3:26 pm

I love Trader Joe’s! I have to drive that far to get to ours too, so I try to just make trips when I am there close to it, but it is worth stopping in pretty much every time I’m over there. Glad you fixed your Garmin!

30 Danica @ It's Progression October 19, 2012 at 4:05 pm

I love Trader Joe’s…I get most of our groceries from there–the prices are fantastic compared to all of the other grocery stores in our city.
Good luck this weekend!!

31 Bek @ Crave October 19, 2012 at 9:58 pm

Love your sensible attitude! I hope you feel great when you run today, and I’ll know you will do great :)

32 Tonya October 20, 2012 at 8:46 am

Ok, I think I’m the only person who has never been to Trader Joes. :(
This weekend, I’m going to stock up on healthy foods. I’m make all my quinoa and grill all my chicken breast so it’s ready for packing during the week. I’m also going to go for a little run and then try to familiarize myself with my balance ball. Gearing up for BBB!

33 Cara @ I Don't Believe in Diets October 21, 2012 at 11:00 pm

Living in California most my life where Trader Joe’s were everywhere, and then moving to Texas 4.5 years ago without one I almost had a heart attack. Finally there is one about 3 hours away from me, and I did make the trek out there a few weekends ago. Granted I was heading there to see my father in law not JUST go to Trader Joe’s. But soon there will be a Trader Joe’s 1 hour away and I might just take the trek. That is probably a little silly to admit, but I am an over sharer, I can’t help it!
