Wild Weekend

by tinareale on November 5, 2012

Good morning! Did you enjoy that extra hour of sleep this weekend (for those who did the time change thing)? I sure did! An extra hour of sleep should happen every Saturday night, in my opinion. I think I would feel a lot more well rested on a weekly basis if we could make that happen. Now, for the next question – did you make the weekend count? Remember – what you do on the weekend adds up. And I did my best to add a lot to my health, wellness, and wholeness bank this weekend.

I started off the weekend with a morning strength workout.

It felt weird hitting up the gym with the kids instead of heading out for a run on Saturday morning, but I liked it just fine. Plus, that full body circuit left me feeling pretty good by the end – my core especially!

After the gym, I had to run a quick errand with the kids for a determined out and back trip to a Hobby Lobby. I have now officially visited every Hobby Lobby in a 20 mile radius of my area trying to nab this one particular ornament. Warning – finding 27 of the same ornament can be quite the challenge. I’ll clue you in on why I need so many of one ornament sometime next week. Nevertheless, Hobby Lobby mission accomplished and I could move on with my morning.

To make up for the time at the gym and shopping, I immediately headed to the park to enjoy the beautiful fall morning to run around with the kids.

We played tag, swung on swings, and basically giggled our way through that hour together before heading home for some lunch…and naps for them to prepare for the big afternoon ahead.

Things got pretty wild for the afternoon and evening….

…at the zoo!

We actually bought memberships earlier this year, went once, and have yet to come back. With a Members Only night, the year winding down, and some good friends attending – we knew we had to make the trek down. I’m certainly glad we did. We had a lot of fun.

It never gets old watching the kids’ excitement over animals. Makenzie and her best friend, Riley, were running around with excitement. Riley wanted to see the elephants…Makenzie wanted to see the pandas.

Braedon just wanted out of his stroller to see anything and everything.

It was a good time to visit and we had the chance to see pretty much everything at the Atlanta Zoo.

My favorites were the panda bears and then the gorillas. They are so interesting to watch! Plus, we caught them at feeding time which was really neat to witness. Although not as “exciting” shall we say as witnessing goats up close and personal in the petting zoo.

We watched one pee on a woman. We tried to warn her, but it was just too late. Ewww. The kids would have stayed much longer but my friend, Danielle, and I were pretty done after that. So we lured the kids out with promises of a carousel ride. That got them moving pretty quickly.

I love the carousel! It was the first ride I ever rode with Makenzie when she was younger and this weekend I got to enjoy it with Braedon for his first “carnival ride” experience.

Who would you say is more excited? Kid is already looking at me like “sheesh, mom, you’re embarrassing me”. Get used to it little man. This woman ain’t ever calming down her love for you two.

By that time the night finally started to wind down with a picnic dinner – with Subway, of course.

It’s kind of our go-to for picnic style dinners. I always go for the club with spinach, tomato, onion, pickles, olives, extra jalapenos (gotta have the jalapenos!), and spicy mustard. I like my mouth on fire.

After dinner we made a quick pit stop into the Members Only night festival tent. Which was kind of a let down, but the kids still liked it. They got to dance, jump in a jumpy play thing (with kids 3x their size that made both of us mommas nervous), and hang out with…

…whatever this creature thing is. I guess if the kids end the night in smiles, it was a successful evening! And a “wild” (ha!) weekend! Come back later this afternoon for a “wild” Move It Monday!

Your Turn – When was the last time you ever went to a zoo? What was your favorite thing to see/do?

The last zoo I went to was in Bali! It was pretty neat, but pair all that working back and forward (terrible with directions) with the walking we already did EVERYWHERE, we were knackered by the end, plus we were kid-less too. I don’t want to imagine what it’d be like with munchkins.

2 tinareale November 5, 2012 at 6:28 pm

How neat! Bali?! Although that does sound like a lot of walking around.

3 Glenneth November 5, 2012 at 7:01 am

i agree with makenize – i like the panda bears! looks like a fun weekend!

4 molly @ heart, sole & cereal November 5, 2012 at 7:10 am

that subway sandwich looks delish. sometimes subway just hits the spot in the best way, and i’m all over a spicy sandwich. the more my face sweats the better. tmi? whatever.

i used the love the zoo as a kid. when my brothers and i were young my mom took us ALL the time. anytime we were remotely bored, we piled into the car and sang that song about “daddy’s taking us to the zoo tomorrow” except it was obviously mommy. i haven’t gone many times since but boy do i remember loving it.

M’s hair is SO long!!!

8 tinareale November 5, 2012 at 6:29 pm

I know! I should probably get it trimmed at least.

Oh my gosh, your pictures just made my heart melt. I just heard a HORRIFIC story about a little boy and a tragic accident at the Pittsburgh zoo this weekend. I am so glad you had a beautiful weekend with your babes. Happy Monday girl.

You know, I’ve actually never been to the Atlanta Zoo. I have been to the one in DC a bunch of times though, mostly when I was a kid.

Odd tall man creature;-)

Our town has a tiny zoo–all the ‘big animals’ were asleep so our favorites were the tortoise and prairie dogs, sounds exciting, no?

12 tinareale November 5, 2012 at 6:30 pm

Your comment about “odd tall man creature” reminds me that I got strangely weirded out that when kids hug these characters, their heads typically end up a the person’s crotch. Kind of disturbing.

13 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More November 5, 2012 at 9:06 am

Those are definitely some happy kids. Looks like a successful trip to the zoo! :)

14 Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots November 5, 2012 at 9:18 am

Mackenzie’s hair is so long and beautiful I am jealous! Gosh I cant even remember the last time i went to the zoo! But I do love it there!

15 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries November 5, 2012 at 9:45 am

Your little guy is getting so big! Your kids are both adorable. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve been to the zoo… I’m sure we’ll frequent it more as we start popping out a few kiddos though. ;)

16 Rachel B - Busy Mama November 5, 2012 at 10:00 am

Awww! We go to the zoo all the time! It’s only afew blocks from our house and is toddler friendly so I don’t worry too much about Mini Terrorist being stomped by bigger kids or finding his way into a Lion cage. It’s amazing how early they start getting embarrassed by mommy love, huh!

17 Bethany @ Accidental Intentions November 5, 2012 at 10:19 am

I went to the zoo three times in 2011, but haven’t been back once since that July! My lack of zoo-attendence is kind of inexcusable, since the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is super easy to get to and FREE!…but I guess when life gets in the way a zoo trip falls low on the priority list. I love getting to see all sorts of animals, though. If a place has a petting zoo I like it even more :)

18 Alex @ therunwithin November 5, 2012 at 10:22 am

gosh they are adorable! I always loved going to the zoo when I was that age.

19 Amanda @ Run Principessa November 5, 2012 at 11:31 am

Oh the zoo looks like so much fun!! I didn’t make it out this season, but I live so close to the Philadelphia Zoo that I’m not sure why. My favorite thing to do there is to visit the giraffes. :)

20 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats November 5, 2012 at 12:07 pm

I like to run through the zoo here in Chicago, and I think I did that about 3 or 4 weeks ago? I love it because 1) it’s free! and 2) right by home! I used to LOVE going to the zoo in Kansas City when I was younger, we were also members so it was nice to go a few times a year.

21 tinareale November 5, 2012 at 6:32 pm

That’s so neat that your zoo is free! Next time I come to Chicago you will have to take me running there.

23 clare @ fittingitallin November 5, 2012 at 1:12 pm

Oh my gosh it’s been years, but my favorite running route in St. Louis runs right past it! The great thing is that the St. Louis Zoo is FREE! My grandma used to take me all the time as a kid

24 tinareale November 5, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Yours and others’ comments have me feeling like I’m missing out! Our zoo costs $$$. I think it was like $100 or something for a family membership pass. Crazy!

25 jobo November 5, 2012 at 1:53 pm

Did you know I have only been to the zoo ONCE and it was on a first date? LOL. I LOVE the zoo though and it makes me want to go again, with M. Cute! LOVE the pics of the kids on the carousel! So adorable!

26 Melissa @ Live, Love, & Run November 5, 2012 at 2:05 pm

Ahhh…the zoo. I have a strange, on-the-fence love with zoos. Part of me hates them, part of me absolutely adores them. I was actually a keep at our local zoo for a little while, and my favorite part was working with the amur tiger and the four snow leopards (two were cubs). I’m big on the big cats. <3 I miss them terribly.

I love that your go-to picnic food is Subway…it's the same here. ;) We'll grab some Subway and head up the mountain and pick an overlook and eat. Good stuff.

27 Brittany (Healthy Slice of Life) November 5, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Such adorable pictures!!
I can not wait to take H to the zoo. We took her to a local spot, a ranch, and she liked it, but I can’t wait for her to really get that she is seeing some awesome animals. What a fun weekend!

28 Laura @ Mommy Run Fast November 5, 2012 at 2:43 pm

Aww, what a fun weekend! I’m glad you got an extra hour… with kids, it’s so much less predictable. Staying up later often backfires for us, and my daughter wakes up even earlier than usual. But thankfully, she got the memo and we got a bit of extra sleep as well. :)

29 [email protected] Palate November 5, 2012 at 2:46 pm

I love the zoo! Last time was during the Summer with my little niece…always a fan of the penguins!

30 [email protected] Eat Right Newsletter November 5, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Aww, your kids are adorable! I am a HUGE fan of Subway, it’s definitely a great picnic option too! I’m always looking for healthy options on the go, so Subway is great for that!

31 Danielle @ Itsaharleyyylife November 5, 2012 at 10:42 pm

ahhh the zoo! It looks like so much fun! I love seeing penguins when they have them! (:

32 Cecilia November 7, 2012 at 9:01 pm

We have a great zoo here in Memphis. My girls favorite part of the zoo….the playground. Go figure.
