#RnRNOLA Training: Week 2

by tinareale on November 20, 2012

The second week of training for the Rock N Roll New Orleans Marathon is now on the books! Things went mostly well training-wise last week, until the long run (more below). I guess like anything in life we experience many highs and lows along the way. Time to recap from where I left off a week ago!

Tuesday 11/13: 4 mile Treadmill Recovery Run + Full Body Weights Workout

Once again, headed to the gym for my Tuesday treadmill time. I pretty much hate treadmills, but the ones at my new gym do have some nice perks. Each cardio machine has a television. So while running my 4 miles (plus warm-up and cool-down walk), I got to flip between some Food Network and creeping on my children via the live kids room feed. I also took this run slower than I normally do, averaging a 10:20 pace as suggested in my plan, and it made a world of difference in feeling refreshed later in the week.

Following my run, I hit the weights area for a solid workout of group sets.

Wednesday 11/14: Speed Work! (6 miles w/ avg 8:59 pace)

It felt pretty dang good to have speed work on the day. I needed to not think this run and just go. Speed work is perfect for that. I had to complete 3 mile repeats with 1/2 mile recovery jogs plus warm-up and cool down. The run went perfectly and I hit all my target paces.

  • 0.0 – 1.0 = 9:38
  • 1.0 – 2.0 = 8:13
  • 2.0 – 2.5 = 4:49 (9:40 pace)
  • 2.5 – 3.5 = 8:10
  • 3.5 – 4.0 = 4:49 (9:40 pace)
  • 4.0 – 5.0 = 8:12
  • 5.0 – 6.0 = 10:07 recovery mile

Thursday 11/15: Spin Class + Jillian Michaels Extreme Shed & Shred DVD

Nothing too new or exciting. I really enjoyed the RPM class again. The class went a bit heavier on the resistance this past week, which had my legs burning after speed work the day before. I ended up needing a break after the class, so I opted to hit weights later at home with Jillian. It was a good decision. I forget how much I always like her DVDs. Plus, not having to think about what to do in a workout always feels nice.

Friday 11/16: 6 easy miles (avg 9:21 pace)

I experienced a very cleansing run. I threw on some of my favorite worship music and just ran nice and steady. I allowed for some tears, prayers, and deep thoughts to accompany on this run and I ended feeling a lot more refreshed than when I began.

Saturday 11/17: Upper Body @ Gym

I don’t normally do anything on Saturdays, but I felt like blowing off some pent up energy again so I went to the gym for upper body only and had a really great workout. I did a few supersets for my chest, back, and shoulders and called it a day in about 30 minutes.

Sunday 11/18: 9.45 miles (avg 10:00 pace)

Doesn’t look too shabby at all…but my plan called for 14 miles. I ended up cutting this run short when what started off as a very dull ache turned to some occasional sharper pains in my lower inner leg (almost but not quite ankle area). I knew it wouldn’t be smart to continue, so I stopped and had Peter come and pick me up. I immediately emailed my wonderful running coach with a bit of a freak out (sorry about that, Heather!) and then went home to ice and recover.

She talked me off a bit of a ledge and we have a plan for the next week or two to see how things are going. I had been running more miles in my Brooks PureFlows instead of my Saucony Rides and we think the slightly lower heel drop and lower profile on that one could be affecting me more than I originally felt or realized. I also have a date with my sports chiro this afternoon to check on things with a plan to take it easier for this week. Let’s hope it was just a one-time thing that I caught in time to care for and move forward!

Monday: 11/19 – Hot Yoga

This training recap  has already gotten mighty wordy so I’ll save talk about this new to me class for another week. I just have to say my body mightily enjoyed it after last week’s training.

Your Turn: Best workout of last week? Do you watch TV with the treadmill?

Your workouts for the week look great! I love cleansing runs with good music, always refreshing after a long day. And I love Jillian’s videos! They are always fun to throw in when like you said you don’t want to think about what workouts to do. She always manages to kick my butt :)

Those treadmills are pretty awesome! I don’t have any of that new-fangled equipment in my school gym, so I just get to watch the huge construction site outside my window!

That’s hilarious that you can creep on your kids from the treadmill. I bet that gives you such peace of mind!

My best workout last week was my 5 mile run on the National Mall with an old friend. It was so great to catch up!

your gyms treadmills are awesome! That is the biggest screen I have ever seen at a gym! That is also neat that you can keep an eye on your kids! what a great idea!

Whoa, that’s one fancy gym! I’m not sure how I’d feel about those TV’s. I’d like to check on my LO in the childcare room, but not sure I’d like other people to have the ability watcher her too. Does that make you nervous?

I thought about that briefly too. It’s pretty distant so you can’t make out anything too distinguishing of the kids when watching and they are pretty good about security there (Peter can’t even pick up the kids if I’m the one who logs them in) so I try to have comfort in that.

Love it when treadmills have tvs – the ones at my old gym did! I’ve never seen one with live feeds to the kids area though – that’s pretty cool!

How do you like hot yoga? (pardon me if I missed this answer in a prior post!)
I always watch TV if I’m on the treadmill! Usually I’m there in the morning, and it’s Home Improvement :-P

I liked it a lot! Although I don’t think its set as hot as the traditional ones. It was 85-90 degrees and isn’t Bikram like 100 or something?

Great job on your workouts! I can’t wait to have a gym membership again… We’re trying to save up some money at the moment, so I’ve been doing most of my workouts in our “home gym” or doing workout DVDs. There’s just something about the gym environment that I love and motivates me though! I just recently bought a Jillian Michael’s Kickboxing DVD and tried it out on Saturday. It was SO fun and got me all nice and sweaty and sore. I would definitely chalk it up as my best workout from this past week!

11 Molly @ Just Your Average Athlete November 20, 2012 at 10:07 am

I’m not a huge exercise DVD person but I’ve heard such great things about Jillian Michaels’ at-home workouts, I might need to check it out. It’s so awesome your gym has a live kids room feed! I’ve never seen something like that at a gym before. Even if we did have that at my gym, I’d doubt I’d be able to utilize it…when I’m running, I have to keep my eyes glued to the top of the treadmill, otherwise I feel like I lose balance and start running into the side of the rails haha

12 clare @ fittingitallin November 20, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Hey Tina! I had the same problem running in my Pure Cadences, so I went back to my usual Adrenalines with support for any runs over 5 or 6 miles!

13 tinareale November 21, 2012 at 6:50 am

Thanks, Clare, for the heads up! Good to know that’s all it took to fix the little aches for you. I’m hoping its the same for me. :)

I have JUST started experimenting with watching TV at the gym vs. listening to music and it does help me get through those DREADmiles! Nice week of training!!

15 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats November 20, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Do you mind sharing your worship music playlist?

16 tinareale November 21, 2012 at 6:52 am

Not at all! It’s pretty much all these songs I have in this post – http://www.tinareale.com/1215/100-motivational-workout-songs/ – and then I need to update it with some I log in a memo on my phone (like 10000 Reasons and that new one by Plum).

17 Stefanie @ Thin Vegetarian November 20, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Best workout was my first 11-miler on Saturday! I was relieved all went well because the week before I felt awful about halfway through but was so far away (and didn’t have my metro card) that I just had to keep going.

18 tinareale November 21, 2012 at 6:53 am

Yay for a good run!

19 Bek @ Crave November 20, 2012 at 10:46 pm

My best workout would be teaching my classes! I don’t go on the tready often but usually there will be a tv around…unfortunately, very rarely can anything distract me from how much I hate running on the treadmill :P

20 Julia H. @ Live Young & Prosper November 21, 2012 at 1:32 pm

Food Network always ends up being the best channel to watch at the gym…how ironic, haha. I sometimes get bored watching just the regular cooking shows (like 30 Minute Meals, Barefoot Contessa, etc.), but when I’m at the gym they’re suddenly much more enjoyable. Wonder why :P

21 Sharla November 21, 2012 at 3:13 pm

I have recently added yoga as a weekly routine rather than just hitting it sporadically and can see a huge difference in my other workouts. I haven’t tried hot yoga yet though – can’t wait to hear more.

I can’t believe this is what you focus on after your dog dies on your watch. Regardless of all of your god talk, you are the ultimate example of someone who is Christian in name only. Shame on you for what you did and for how you wrote about it. No one who truly cared about their dog would ever dismiss her death like that. It’s no wonder she was always running away to your in-laws’ house. Dogs can tell when you don’t give a shit about them. I have never read your blog, and I certainly won’t now. You are a despicable person.
