Daring Mocha Oatmeal

by tinareale on November 21, 2011

I have a deep affection for many things. My family. My friends. Fitness. Treating my body well. Serving others. My faith. On a lighter note, I also have a deep affection for a few other things.

Before my workouts every morning, I grab a quick snack to go. Usually a piece of fruit or a bar of some sort. This gives me enough energy to get through my workout, but it never fails that I leave the gym ready for a full breakfast. And nothing satisfies that post-workout hunger like a hearty bowl of oatmeal.

Oatmeal is seriously my favorite breakfast and it never gets old to me. I can eat it numerous ways.

With sliced banana. With berries. With pumpkin. With dried fruit. With almonds, pecans, or walnuts. With Greek yogurt mixed in. And always with nut butter. Always.

This morning, though, I wanted something a little more exciting. I had a sudden stroke of genius. Remember those things I said I loved at the beginning of this post? Chocolate? Coffee? Breakfast? And, obviously, oatmeal.

Why not combine them all for one heck of a delicious breakfast? Enter MOCHA OATMEAL!!

In order to craft this delicious combo, I prepared my oatmeal as normal. For my oats, I always do the following:

Serve myself 1/3 – 1/2 cup scoop of rolled oatmeal in a microwave safe dish. Cover the oatmeal with water. Microwave on 50% power (that’s the KEY!) for around four minutes.

After the oatmeal finishes cooking, I add extra liquid until they get to the perfect consistency for me. Usually, I turn to unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but this morning I turned daring.

I added black coffee as my liquid this morning. Then, stirred in a heaping tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, and a small splash of sweetener. I use NuNaturals stevia liquid drops.

It created  a mocha flavored breakfast bowl…that I inevitably licked clean. I see a new favorite combo!
