Scenes from the Year

by tinareale on December 28, 2012

Good morning my fine friends! I hope this day finds you well. I know I’m in a good mood knowing that a low key and relaxing weekend awaits. Also that a new year awaits! Since this is the last Friday of 2012, I thought I would do a little Scenes from the Year post instead of my regular Scenes from the Week. Partly because I always love seeing other yearly recaps since, let’s face it, it’s easy to miss some cool things, and also because I realized I really needed this today.

You see, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this year. 2012 had quite a few moments I wish I could brush away. I dealt with some never-ending smaller frustrations like injury after injury after injury that just wore me down. Then there were also much bigger frustrations like some seriously stressful house problems. Our basement flooded with sewer water for practically 2 weeks straight a few months ago and we have to spend the next who knows how many months basically rebuilding the entire back side of our house.

Amidst all that, we also faced the tragic loss of Roxy which still leaves me with moments of deep sadness…and, won’t lie, guilt. And, while we aren’t sugar coating things, this year was probably my hardest year dealing with old mental demons in the past 3 years. I have had weeks upon weeks where I really feared that I was slipping back into depression. That doesn’t include some other very trying things going on with my family that I simply will not get into publicly on the blog.

Despite those things, I still know how incredibly blessed I am and refuse to let them define this past year. This past year certainly had some incredibly bright spots and lessons I value tremendously, which I know have led to growth I would not have otherwise experienced. So, instead of dwelling on the lows, I want to highlight those bright spots here and now. For myself…and for a fun way to end the year.

Celebrated Braedon’s First Birthday

And I refuse to believe he will be TWO in just a couple of weeks. Ahhhh!!!

Kicked off Best Body Bootcamp

April marked the very first round of Best Body Bootcamp this year and then I held two more rounds over the course of the year. I have SO MUCH FUN with these workouts and the interaction with the people who participate. I truly love love love what I do and having the chance to share it with many this way. I hope to make fitness more accessible and fun, which this seems to accomplish.

PS – Don’t forget to enter that giveaway that ends TONIGHT! And then registration ends on Monday.

Ran the Publix GA Half Marathon

And it was even more special because I got to run it with some of my very best pals – Lindsay, Lee, Heather, and Laura was there to cheer us on.

Speaking of Blends…

I also had the best time at the Blend Retreat this spring and cannot wait to return in 2013. I cannot say enough about what a great experience the retreat is and how it truly brings the blogging community together. I think I did a pretty good job expressing my love in my two recap posts.

Ran My First Marathon

Which may very well be my first and LAST marathon, but whatever. It was an experience I will never forget. Although I do hope my body can forget it eventually.

Went to Cedar Point with Peter

Basically an adult’s playground and just the way we wanted to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. I think we had smiles literally plastered to our face the entire trip.

Took Makenzie to Disney World for the First Time

Words still fail me at how to capture the joy of that day.

A Runner’s Dream

The Runner’s World Half & Festival weekend I got to attend with FitFluential was literally a runner’s dream come true. I have so many cherished memories (and new great friends!) from that weekend.

Finally Meeting a Dear Blog Friend

Making those signs for the Chicago Marathon was pretty dang fun too. My weekend in Chicago was without a doubt a huge highlight of my year.

Celebrating Makenzie’s 4th Birthday

We attended a few special shows around her birthday, like Disney Princesses on Ice and Beauty & the Beast on Broadway.

Also Celebrating 3 Years Binge-Free

That image reminds me of another blessing – joining a new church that we absolutely LOVE.

Fulfilling a Passion

I get to do what I love day in and day out. I get to be a mom and wife, while also spreading around my love for fitness with my online personal training. I would never have expected this blog and my online training to have gone the way it has this past year. All glory goes to God on that one! And in all things, really. I also feel incredibly blessed for the friendships it has established.

A Trip to My Favorite Southern City

I got to visit Charleston with Peter for a fun weekend away and to race a neat race.

Then, finished out the year celebrating with friends old and new as well as my family that I hold so dear. Yea. Not such a bad year at all. I can say cheers to that!

Your Turn: What was the highlight of your 2012?

1 michelle December 28, 2012 at 7:36 am

The highlight of 2012… that’s a tough one. I had so many ups and downs but what I enjoyed most was all the traveling I was able to do. If I had to narrow it down even more, I’d say that my trip to Italy (venice in particular) was the biggest highlight.

2 Allison December 28, 2012 at 7:39 am

My highlight from 2012 was buying my first home! It was a crazy process and felt like it took forever, but in the end it was totally worth it. Another highlight was discovering your blog! Honestly, I really look forward to your positive posts, words of encouragement, and, of course, Boot Camp! You really do make fitness accessible and relatable, while still motivating me to get my booty moving! You rock, Tina!

3 tinareale December 28, 2012 at 2:37 pm

Aw, thank you! You certainly know how to put a smile on a girl’s face. :)

4 Kierston December 28, 2012 at 7:42 am

Great post! Love everything you shared :)

Here’s to an awesome 2013!

5 Lauren December 28, 2012 at 7:57 am

It has been one year…that’s for sure! Although you had a few hardships, you always remained positive and such an inspiration to so many! May 2013 bring you unending blessings and happiness! xoxo

6 lindsay December 28, 2012 at 8:05 am

such a year! i couldn’t agree more! and i think when we are really “thriving” is when satan uses the mind to think otherwise. So good for you for seeing the blessings! You are an inspiration my friend.

7 Coco December 28, 2012 at 8:12 am

Love all the smiling pictures of friends and family — that’s really what makes a great year!

8 Lee December 28, 2012 at 8:20 am

This is a great idea to focus on the positives of the year. I think I might try to do the same on my blog.

BTW – that fountain totally is a pineapple. I think it’s actually called “Pineapple Fountain.”

Want to run the Silver Comet 10K in March?

9 tinareale December 28, 2012 at 2:38 pm

I would love to, but I’m actually taking some extended time off running now and not sure if I’ll be ready for a 10K then or not. :(

10 AmyC December 28, 2012 at 8:22 am

What a busy year! I love the signs you made for Chicago!

11 Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots December 28, 2012 at 8:30 am

12 Linz @ Itz Linz December 28, 2012 at 8:44 am

a highlight was definitely the whole rwhalf weekend!!

13 Megan S. December 28, 2012 at 8:51 am

Congrats on the 3 year anniversary :) what a wonderful thing to accomplish and still be going strong! I also love Andy Stanley…we use a lot of his studies in my Bible study group- he is pretty funny and gets the message across well!

14 Steph @fitmomtraining December 28, 2012 at 9:01 am

Like you, I had highlights and lowlights through the year. It was an amazing year but a tough one as well. I’d have to say the highlight was the birth of my second son in February (and like you, I can’t believe I am about to have a 3 year old and a 1 year old on my hand!)

Happy New Year Tina!

15 Sarah (Shh...Fit Happens) December 28, 2012 at 9:24 am

What a touching and inspiring post. I especially liked how you said you ran your first and last marathon, haha, I am glad there are some people that agree running that far is a dreadful idea! I am yet to try it, but it is on my bucket list, yikes!

16 Kim @ Redefining Kim December 28, 2012 at 9:24 am

2012 was a pretty great year for me. The highlights included starting my blog, attending Fitbloggin, celebrating 3 years of marriage, my daughter turning 2, embracing my age–the big 30, and starting a fantastic new job!

17 tinareale December 28, 2012 at 2:39 pm

Definitely a GREAT year!

18 Christine @ Love, Life, Surf December 28, 2012 at 9:28 am

Love this recap. So many amazing things this year for you. Your signs for the Chicago marathon are awesome. And I can’t believe that BBB just started in April! I think that that has been one of my highlights this year :-)

26 Amanda @RunToTheFinish December 28, 2012 at 11:20 am

one of my biggest goals when we move is to find a church. it seems silly to start one now and move in a month, but I know how much that support can mean

looks like the good out weighed the bad in 2012

27 tinareale December 28, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Love that goal! What city are you moving to again?

28 Lauren @ Sassy Molassy December 28, 2012 at 12:29 pm

It sounds like 2012 was a great one for you, Tina, despite some challenges. I really enjoyed the Bootcamp I participated in with you. I may sign up again soon. It’s just hard to balance with marathon training. :) Keep up the good work on your blog and personal training. Always enjoy reading!

29 Heather @ Better With Veggies December 28, 2012 at 12:36 pm

Here’s to many more amazing ups in 2013!!!

30 Ali @ WHOLEistically Fit December 28, 2012 at 1:31 pm

I love the highlight recap! So many fun trips and adventures. There were a lot of highlights for me in 2012, but one was definitely the launch of my blog. I’m so excited to see what 2013 has in store for it. :)

31 Jesica @rUnladylike December 28, 2012 at 1:36 pm

I love, love, love this post! What a great idea to do your 2012 recap in photos and a few sentences. I enjoyed looking at your your pictures. You’ve had an incredible year with so many things to be proud of!!! I think I’m most proud of finishing my first half Ironman this year. I also ran my fifth marathon. I did my yearly recap in 26.2 blog posts this year :) It is so fun to look back and see all we accomplished. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Here’s to a fabulous 2013! Hope I’ll get to meet you in person this year, fellow Georgian! We’ve got to get a blogger meet-up on the books :)

32 jobo December 28, 2012 at 1:47 pm

I love love love your year in pictures!! Such great moments this year, despite some down moments too. I always commend you for your honesty and transparency. And one of my highlights this year by far, was meeting you TWICE! So special and blessed :) Cheers to 2013!

Yes! Meeting you was a HUGE highlight for me too!

34 [email protected] Palate December 28, 2012 at 1:53 pm

Happy end of 2012 almost! Love the blue dress you’re wearing o Makenzies 4th birthday! Really pretty! You’ve have quite a few highlights this year! Bringing Naoise to Disney on Ice and my to Hell and Back 10 k run were my two top highlights!

36 Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning December 28, 2012 at 3:16 pm

I LOVE this re-cap!! What a great year you had- it was so fun to look back at this, because I remember reading about so many of these events on your blog.
BLEND was DEFINITELY up there for me- such a life-changing weekend!!
(Btw- I’m planning on copying your idea for a post on Monday or Tuesday. :) )

37 MegG December 28, 2012 at 3:26 pm

What a beautiful year, and a great way to look back. I’m sorry to hear about the challenges you faced, life is certainly a roller coaster of ups and downs. My biggest highlight of 2012 was probably feeling supported and loved by so many people throughout the year, I hope for the same in 2013!

38 [email protected] December 28, 2012 at 3:42 pm

Love this! You did have some awesome moments!

I actually LOVED 2012. This was such a fantastic year! A few highlights–training in GRIT & CXWORX, going on a week-long houseboat vacay, and moving to a great place.

39 Danica @ It's Progression December 28, 2012 at 5:40 pm

This is a great post…I’m sorry you went through so much heartache this year, but I admire you for keeping such a good attitude here and putting your focus on the positives of the past year. It’s easy to see that you’re a wonderful wife and mother and I know you inspire all of us with each post you write.

40 Bek @ Crave December 28, 2012 at 8:22 pm

A great year and a great attitude! This is what makes you brilliant Tina :)

41 Kim December 28, 2012 at 10:08 pm

What a fun recap! Sounds like a great year!!

42 Laura @ Mommy Run Fast December 28, 2012 at 10:09 pm

You had a fantastic year! I felt the same way after my first marathon- that it would be my last, and I dealt with a lot of injury before/after as well. Now I’m heading into #2 also thinking it will be my last, but my body seems to have adapted to a higher level of training so I’m somehow still healthy!
Thanks for the honest feedback on your year- we all have rough days/weeks/months, and it’s helpful to remember that we’re human and share those, too. Hoping 2013 holds less pain for you- and many new blessings and surprises!

43 Heather December 29, 2012 at 5:33 pm

I loved reliving some of your favorite memories with you! I can’t wait until you plan a big trip to disney, aahhh!

44 Katie December 29, 2012 at 7:07 pm

I’m sorry for your hard times Tina. But I see a lot of great things in your year too! Keep on staying strong!

The highlight of my year was getting married in June!

I made some great strides in healing from some personal things the past few months and I am going to dive into 2013 loving myself and ready to get my life back.

45 Melodie December 29, 2012 at 8:38 pm

I absolutely LOVE how you were honest about the negative, but chose to focus on the positive. That is my challenge to myself as this new year approaches.

Love all of the things that the Lord helped you to accomplish this year :) Love reading your blog!

46 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More December 29, 2012 at 8:47 pm

A great year for sure. And I LOVE that picture from Blend. :)
