Cathe XTrain: I Just Can’t Get Enough

by tinareale on March 14, 2013

Earlier this week I told you that I believe consistency provides the key to success. When it comes to workouts, I achieve consistency through having workouts I enjoy. That isn’t the only way I help improve my consistency, though. With a busy schedule and kids, I have another workout tool up my sleeve. Workout DVDs.

I love them. In fact, when I first started working out it was in my parents’ basement with my sister doing various Tae Bo, Turbo Jam, and Cathe DVDs. I even have a post devoted completely to what I believe to be the best workout DVDs.

Best Workout DVDs

Although, I have a need to update that post. You see, my absolute favorite DVD instructor came out with a new workout series. It blows everything else out of the water.

cathe XTrain

Cathe Friedrich. I could do a whole post solely about her – her credibility, her creativity, her quality, her motivation, her rocking body…yes, I could go on. I’ve adored this woman and her workouts for almost a decade. I have a huge old CD case (which you can see how huge I’m talking in the picture below in upper left) I use to hold my workout DVDs and, literally, 80% of them are Cathe workouts. You cannot go wrong with a single one of them.

Which is why when FitFluential asked if I would like to review Cathe’s new XTrain DVD series, I immediately hopped on board. I would have bought these DVDs without a doubt anyway.

After I finished writing up and trialing workout plans for the last round of Best Body Bootcamp, I wanted to give my mind a break and just follow along with something. XTrain came in the mail right about that time so I decided to use the workouts to supplement my other regular workouts. So, let’s talk the workouts.

The XTrain contains nine (or ten if you purchase the bonus ride DVD) workout DVDs to work together in one of four different plans you can follow. Each XTrain program is designed to help you blast calories, improve strength, and push you past plateaus. The plans (ranging from 30 day to 90 day programs) constantly mix things up to keep your body guessing – from solely strength workouts to high intensity cardio to circuit blasts. I promise you will never get bored.

A quick run down of the various workouts in the XTrain Series:

  • Chest, Back, & Shoulders – heavy weight upper body workout with new variations of classic moves all put together in challenging new combos
  • Bis & Tris – similar to the Chest, Back, & Shoulders workout but focusing on the arms
  • Burn Sets – an upper body workout geared to really push your muscles to fatigue
  • Super Cuts – a fun circuit based workout that mixes functional training, compound movements, and lots of variations to really work your entire body
  • Legs – a lower body workout with standing work, floor work, ball work, and a bonus barre section
  • Cardio Leg Blast – really challenge the legs with both cardio blasts and lower body exercises
  • All Out Low Impact HIIT – a fun cardio based workout that is low impact but high energy
  • Hard Strikes – a high intensity kickboxing workout that is pure fun
  • Tabatacise – complete one to five tabatas with cardio power blasts and short recoveries <— probably my favorite workout DVD ever
  • Ride – optional workout for those with at home bikes (I did not review this one, but it is an option)

I can say that Tabatacise is my favorite (just because it is SO fun and always goes so quickly), but each of these workouts has such great quality and they come together for one heck of a series with all the great things I’ve come to know and love about Cathe’s workouts.

  • Fun and NEW ways of training. I don’t know how she does it, but Cathe always finds a way to make her workouts different and fun. She keeps up with current fitness research to provide the workouts that get results. It’s never the same thing twice with Cathe.
  • Motivational. Cathe trains with you. The whole way through every workout. That inspires me to see her working hard and pushing through. Plus she always knows what to say for that extra oomph. The other exercisers motivate me as well as they are real women of different shapes and sizes who are having fun, but working hard right there too.
  • Quality. Her workouts are on point with not only the exercise choices and formats, but also with her cueing. She provides great form pointers throughout and excellent instruction.
  • Premixes Galore. One of the very BEST things about Cathe’s workouts are they always come with a ton of premixes with options including timesavers and extra challenges.

In the XTrain Series I discovered a couple new things to love as well.

  • Detailed booklet. The series comes with a fully detailed user guide that includes all the information you could possibly need to follow the plan. You can find four different workout plans to follows, details for each DVD (including every exercise completed, a list of premixes, a summary, and equipment needed), and background information for the reasoning behind the plan and each workout.
  • Bonuses. Even beyond the great premixes, the workouts come with a lot of bonus tracks – core workouts, a barre workout, an extra rear delts workout, 100 rep challenges, and more.

The only con I could see for some people is that Cathe’s workouts do use a wider variety of equipment than some other programs. In my opinion, a step, stability ball, and dumbbells is all you really need and the other equipment could easily have substitutions or not be used for the moves.

Final thoughts? I originally planned to only use the series regularly for that month while taking a break from BBB planning. Well, I have officially become so addicted that I now plan to loosely follow along with one of the 90 day programs. I don’t want to stop doing these workouts! I don’t think I will ever get enough Cathe in my life. Good thing she already has some new workouts planned for 2013. Can’t wait to see those!

Ever heard of Cathe? If so, what’s a fave workout of hers you have done?

Disclosure: I received the Cathe XTrain DVD series free for review in partnership with FitFluential. All opinions are 100% my own and 100% honest. In sum, I love Cathe and my girl crush continues.

You know I’m a HUGE Cathe fan. And I am loving this series. I love that user’s guide too. Such a great idea and the fact that she includes 4 different rotation options is a great bonus. Great review Tina. I knew you’d do her proud ;-)

I like using workout DVD’s too, though I’ve never tried any Cathe ones.

I’m a huge fan of workout DVDs, too!
I just got some of my first Cathe ones and actually am planning on the XTrain Tabatacise today – looking forward to it!!

I’ve never heard of Cathe until your bootcamp where you had some of her workout clips and now I’m definitely interested in trying her DVDs! Thanks for reviewing them for us :)

They are amazing! And I love the exercises she does so try to include them where I can and where they fit. :)

I have workout prescribed by my trainer now but I used to love P90X when I wasn’t motivated to write my own workout. This looks like a good one too. I love the variety – she hits every body part!

I’ve heard of Cathe, but I’ve never had the opportunity to try out her DVDs. I’d love to though! I’m a huge fan of at home workout DVDs to switch things up a bit. I’ll have to check these out!

You should definitely give some a try post baby when at home workout options are so vital. ;)

I’ve heard of Cathe through you! I came to expect a lot of the YouTube links in BBBC would lead to Cathe DVD clips haha. I did enjoy a lot of the things she/you threw at us, although the equipment thing you mention does make me a little hesitant to get a full set of her DVDs. I don’t have a stability ball (and, more significantly, I don’t have ROOM to have a stability ball!), and it can be tricky to figure out modification for stability ball workouts on my own, you know?

11 tinareale March 15, 2013 at 6:44 am

Yea. The equipment can be tough with her workouts. I used to workout solely at home for a few years so over that time I invested in a lot of what she used. At least you can get a little taste of her through BBB. I love including her exercises because she uses such great variations of things.

I have never heard of these DVD’s or Cathe, but now I’m interested! Sounds like a great set–thanks for the detailed review. I think the only hard part might be all the equipment, unless I was somehow able to do the workouts at my gym. Hmmm . . . .

13 purelytwins March 14, 2013 at 11:05 am

we have heard of Cathe but never tried any of her workouts or DVDs before! they sound great!

14 Lisa March 14, 2013 at 11:37 am

I’ve tried a few of her DVD’s and they’ve been nothing but fantastic! I really like them over most, since they’re not really for beginners and I always feel challenged.

I’d never heard of her-so thanks for sharing!! (I don’t do much DVD stuff at home though for now)

I LOVE Cathe and have done SO MANY of her DVDs. I was huge into STS for a long time too, and now Miguel really likes it. I love the digital downloads and use the Ride one often! it is really good!! Love that you are going to do the 90 day program!

17 Jess March 14, 2013 at 1:41 pm

Looooove Cathe!!!! And love that you got a free shot at test driving her new stuff — she’s the best instructor there is out there, I swear. I couldn’t agree more on her credibility too – and her rockin’ bod. Hot stuff!!

Thanks for the great review! I value your recommendations and will definitely check out this DVD.
I was impressed with her YouTube clips that I watched for BBB.

19 tinareale March 15, 2013 at 6:46 am

I love the variety she gives which is why she is a great resource for exercises in BBB too. And thanks for saying you value my recommendations. I do my very best to limit reviews and any sort of promotions to things I genuinely enjoy and think you all would appreciate hearing about. It really means a lot to know it comes across that I give honest feedback and really do like the things I share. :)

Cathe is great! I only have one of her DVDs right now, but this is motivating me to purchase more. Her DVDs are a little pricier than regular DVDs, but like you said, she puts so much time and effort into creating the content, it is worth the extra price tag. I work out almost exclusively to DVDs at home (except for a weekly yoga class and an occassional run), so I’m always looking for new and great options. Thank you for your thorough review!

Ooh, that Tabatacise DVD does sound good! I love Cathe. She’s tough and inspiring without being condescending or annoying. ;-)

22 Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections March 16, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Wow, great review! This sounds like a really good workout program. I LOVE love love workout DVDs. I’ve done a ton of Jillian Michaels stuff and Insanity a few times. I keep going back to those, but after you do a video so many times, it does get old. I might have to try this out!

23 Susan May 19, 2013 at 3:56 pm

I borrowed these DVDs from my sister but she can’t find the booklet that came with it. Could you tell me the example schedule they give that advises which workouts to do on each day? Or even what you have been doing? Just not sure how to put it all together.

24 Renee February 24, 2014 at 8:17 pm

I love X train! I am hoping to do the 90 day rotation but add in some of the newer DVDs and to the max an cross fire in there! I bet I can burn even more fat and have a lot of fun! I can’t see how more people have not heard of her!
