Every week I like to take the time to highlight the efforts and dedication of one of the Best Body Bootcamp participants. These women work hard and deserve some recognition. Join me today in welcoming Michelle – who has been dedicated even during pregnancy!

SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF: I am a working mom with 2 kids (and one on the way – due in May!) who randomly got addicted to running 3 years ago. I started running as a way to squeeze in a exercise with a 1-year with sleep issues and I completely feel in love, despite being the non-athlete in my family my entire life. I couldn’t even run a mile when I was 18 — but I ran a marathon when I was 31! I’ve also run 13 half marathons and a handful of 5ks, 10ks, and 15ks.


ROUNDS OF BBB PARTICIPATED IN: Round 2, Round 4, and currently Round 5.

WHY DID YOU JOIN BBB? I decided to take a hiatus from racing and I really wanted to focus on gaining some strength. I was never great at fitting in resistance/strength training and I was looking for some motivation to be more balanced. Plus, I had the pleasure of meeting Tina in Savannah after I ran my marathon in 2011 and I knew she meant business – but is also very approachable when it comes to questions and concerns. Exactly what you want in a personal trainer!

SOMETHING YOU HAVE ENJOYED: I love the structure and having a set of workouts already laid out for me for the week! I also love the flexibility (you do what you can!) and the challenge. It has been such a great experience overall and really helped me get of my comfort zone.

SOMETHING YOU HAVE LEARNED: I have learned that I really love strength training (don’t tell my running shoes, ok?). I especially like leg work. I feel like it has much such a difference in my physique.

FAVORITE EXERCISE OR WORKOUT FROM BBB? I really like the push/pull workouts — and anything with squats!

WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS HAVE YOU ACHIEVED DURING BBB? I’m still going strong at 36 weeks pregnant! In the past I’ve only done cardio while pregnant. While that has worked for me and I’ve bounced back quickly, I feel so much stronger this time around. This also turning out to be my easiest pregnancy – I haven’t experienced any back pain or discomfort that I did previously and I think a balanced workout program has really contributed.

WHAT STRUGGLES HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED? I found out that I was pregnant during Round 2 of BBB and struggled with exhaustion for the last 2 weeks (I actually skipped Round 3 because of the exhaustion/nausea). Since then, the biggest challenges have been finding ways to modify the workouts for my ever changing and growing body. There are definitely certain exercises that I could do 12 weeks ago that I can’t do now! Because of this though, I’ve learned a lot different muscles and muscle groups and the most efficient ways to build strength and resistance. I’ve also gotten more creative with my cardio. I have spent WAY less time on the elliptical machine this time around and I appreciate that!

HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED? There are a few ways. First is my kids. I think the best way to raise healthy kids is to lead by example. I love that they understand that working out and running makes me healthy and a better mom. The best is when I find them emulating me (they are a big fan of doing wall sits!) and asking if they can work out too.


I do think it helps that I am the kind of person who thrives off of a intense workout/run, so I remind myself how much better I feel when I workout. The results I see (yes, even 9 months pregnant I see results!) make it worth it worth it too. I also love the crazy looks I get at the gym with this huge basketball belly. Last round I could still do high knees and butt kicks (burpees – not so much, though I did try!) and I’m pretty sure people thought I was insane. For some reason, that keeps me going!

ANY OTHER THOUGHTS YOU WISH TO SHARE: If you’re wondering if you can participate in BBB while you are pregnant and if it’s worth it — the answer is YES! Even at 9 months pregnant, I have seen results from participating in BBB. I have lost far less muscle and I feel very fit and strong. I know that it will pay off when it comes to labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery.

I won’t be finishing out this round of Best Body Bootcamp – but I know that I will have these workouts to look forward to when I am cleared to work out again!!

Low this! Way to add strength in Michelle! I taught body pump and cycle my entire pregnancy (and shocked people being up in front of the class with a basketball belly!), and it definitely helped during labor and delivery. Especially the strength. I think being able to push past a challenge (which I’m sure Tina’s workouts are!), helps in those tough moments of labor. I hope everything goes smoothly for you!

Love this! Especially “the crazy looks I get at the gym with this huge basketball belly!” We need to show people it IS ok to exercise while pregnant.

I have a new baby (12 weeks old!) and I worked out my entire pregnancy. I was on the elliptical 3 days before I had my baby girl. I absolutely believe that the reason I had such an easy pregnancy and delivery is largely due to the fact that I worked out the whole 9 months. It’s so good for you and the baby! (I like to think that she is super strong because of my workouts) I have never participated in BBB, but I think I need to to help me get back into shape! I’m doing cardio but not enough strength training!! Looking forward to it!!!

Definitely give BBB — it changed my perspective on strength training! Congrats on your new baby – I’m sure she is super strong! :)

That is amazing- you go girl. I want to be like that when I’m pregnant :) I get weird looks when I put my Iphone (for listening to music) down my sweaty cleavage during weight training! No other option at this point ha.

This is awesome! Ha ha. I might need to start putting my iPhone down my cleavage because wearing my iPod on my hip is getting uncomfortable – and I definitely have enough of it right now. Thanks for the idea!

This is good to know! I am hoping to participate in the next round of BBB, but my husband and I are also hoping to start trying :-) So thanks for the encouragement that it’s possible to do both!
