Happy Friday, friends! And welcome to another Fit Friends feature. Every week I like to highlight one of the many great bloggers out there so you can hopefully make a new fit friend.

Please welcome my fab and fit friend – Angela! She has some great things to share.

SUM UP YOUR BLOG: I work in marketing in the corporate world by day, but outside of my 9-5, I’m an avid runner, foodie, healthy living blogger, fitness instructor, and owner of my health coaching business, Spin 360 Health Coaching. I’m also an ambassador for FitFluential and Greatist, and love talking about all things health and fitness related!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO STAY FIT?

Running, no questions asked! When I was 13, my family moved from my hometown of Edmonton, Alberta to Bahrain, a small island in the Middle East. Over about 3 years, a combination of poor eating choices and not enough physical activity resulted in a significant weight gain. As a teenager, I wanted desperately to get back down to my ‘regular’ size so that my clothes would fit again, and so that I wouldn’t stand out amongst all of my friends. (At 5’10”, that’s easier said than done!) In addition to cleaning up my diet, I found running, and totally fell in love with it.

Unlike the team sports that I’d been participating in since I could walk, running was something that I could do entirely on my own. I didn’t have to rely on a team to turn up for practice and I didn’t need heaps of fancy equipment. I ran almost every day (very slowly at times!) and after about 1 year I had lost all of the weight I’d gained. In fact, I fell so in love with running that I began racing, and a year later, I was 70lbs lighter than I was at my heaviest.

To this day, running continues to be a passion of mine. It’s my “me time”, my chance to mentally get a hold of what I want to accomplish throughout the day, to think through my frustrations and to think about all the things I’m thankful for.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CURRENT GOALS OR RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO SHARE?

Last year I launched my health coaching business, which I’m super proud of because helping people to achieve optimal health is something that totally lights my fire and makes me want to get out of bed each morning. My business goal is to support, inspire, and motivate others to improve their health and be their best. I know what it’s like to be overweight and unhealthy, and I want to help people to realize that they don’t have to be in that same negative place forever.

In terms of fitness, my big fitness goal for this year is to crack the 1:30 mark and set a new half marathon PR. Last year, I just missed my PR of 1:33 at the Lululemon SeaWheeze, a race during which I managed to sprain my SI joint but still finish strong. (To this day, I have no idea how I did it!) This year, I’m running the SeaWheeze again in August, as well as the Toronto GoodLife half marathon on May 5th. Training is going well so far, and I’m determined to break the 1:30 barrier in at least one of these races!

WHAT ARE 5 THINGS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT?

  1. Food. Not just any food, but good, whole, healthy, delicious food. Call me a huge nerd, but I grocery shop for fun, spend entire days cooking in my kitchen, and have probably spent longer in Whole Foods in a single trip than anyone else I know! I love developing recipes and helping people to see that healthy food can be delicious food at the same time.
  2. Fitness. After all that chat about running, this one probably doesn’t come as a surprise! Moving my body in some way, whether it’s a run, weights, cycling, cross training, or doing yoga is how I start every day and a day without just feels wrong!
  3. My friends and family. Having grown up abroad and lived in several different homes, I’ve got friends and family everywhere. Sometimes it’s difficult to keep in touch but I love and value the friendships I have with all of these people so I do my best to email, Skype or see them as much as I can.
  4. Travel. I’ve had the privilege to see a lot of Canada, the US, the UK, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Singapore, Australia, the Dominican Republic, and Italy, but there are still so many places on my list! My dream holiday would be to Hawaii, but I’d also love to go to Thailand (they have amazing food!), Spain, New Zealand, and see more of the Caribbean.
  5. Blogging. If you told me 3 years ago when I started Eat Spin Run Repeat that I’d still be blogging today, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t even begin to describe how amazing the experience has been so far, how many people I’ve met (some in person, and some just online) and how many opportunities have come as a result of being part of the blogging community.

WHAT IS YOUR #1 TIP FOR HEALTHY LIVING?

Life is a marathon, not a sprint, so take it one step at a time. Don’t feel that you have to eat 100% clean every day, or be whatever you define as ‘perfect’, because no one ever is. Replacing old habits with healthier ones can be hard and frustrating at times, but forgive yourself when you make mistakes, learn from them, and remember that each day is a new chance to be better than you were the day before!

  • Reflections on Recovery – This is a post I wrote last year after having dealt with a number of running injuries that prevented me from training as hard as I would have liked. As the first image in the post says, “Tough times don’t last; Tough people do.”
  • Thoughts on Balance… and an Announcement – Last year in August, I was feeling overwhelmed, tired, and guilty for not paying attention to some areas of my life that I knew needed it most. This post talks about achieving balance in life, and for me this meant dropping my blogging schedule down from 5 to 3 times per week.
  • How to make green juice with a Vitamix and a pair of tights – This is by far THE most popular post on my blog. I wrote it last year when I discovered that I didn’t need a juicer to make pulp-less green juice. I have one now (because I’m a sucker for kitchen gadgets), but if you don’t, this tutorial will show you how you can make green juice in a blender!

Good Luck on your goal. My goal this year is to get under 2 hours for my half, 1:30 is awesome, not sure if I will get there

Spain is amazing! While I only spent a week there, I loved it.

I like to have a list and get in and out of the grocery store as fast as possible. Actually, that’s how I like to do all my shopping.
