Yoga Pose Tips: Warrior 2

by tinareale on October 1, 2014

Go to almost any yoga class and you will likely hear a teacher call out “Virabhadrasana 2” to the class. Understandable, since Warrior 2 accomplishes so much in a single pose. The pose strengthens and stretches the legs simultaneously. Reaching out through the arms helps works your upper body in an isometric hold, to build strength in the shoulders and outer arms.   It helps to release tightness in the inner thighs and groin. It opens the chest and lungs. And it even improves endurance. Hold the pose for awhile and tell me your thighs don’t burn. I dare ya!

Warrior 2 is easily one of my favorite poses. You just can’t help but feel stronger when practicing it. To find your strongest Warrior 2 pose, use some of the tips below.

Warrior 2 Pose Tips

If you are tight in the hips or have any knee issues, modify by not sitting as low into the pose. Always focus on proper alignment – front knee not extending past the ankle, shoulders over hips, back hip/knee/ankle all pointing in the same direction. You can also line up the front heel with the back heel instead of the back arch to create more space for the hips. Or gaze with chin in line with breast bone for any feeling of strain to the neck. There are so many tweaks and instructions to this pose, it’s impossible to get them all. Focus on those things you need to help the pose feel better for your body. However, if you have any injuries or health concerns, please seek advice from your doctor or personal yoga instructor on any needed modifications. And always, always work your poses within a pain-free range of motion. Now time to practice. Bring out your inner warrior!

Do you love Warrior 2? Why….or why not?

I LOVE Warrior 2! Is it weird that when I hold it I just feel like this strong warrior? (I’m such a dork…) ;)

Not a dork….because I feel the same way! It just makes me feel STRONG!

I do love Vira 2, especially after one particular Iyengar class and the cues and adjustments that teacher gave just blew my mind.

The alignment freak in me LOVES Iyengar instruction. We’re trained to teach a hatha style hot sequence (26 poses similar to Bikram…but not the same style or exact series) and power vinyasa classes. All with Iyengar based instruction. My teacher blows my mind with her alignment knowledge. it’s awesome!

my hips are so tight that the instructor always has to fix my warrior 2!

Not “fixes”. Adjustments are little touches of love to help a pose be even yummier. ;)
