My Yoga Must Haves – Products To Make The Most Of Your Practice

by tinareale on October 22, 2014

I don’t know about you, but I love to hear what products or services other people use regularly. When I got involved in yoga, I wanted to know what were other people’s yoga must haves. Because whenever I get really involved in something,  I want to make sure to invest in good stuff. Tried and true products. I have found some of my personal favorites by hearing about them from others. So today I will share the love – letting you know my yoga favorite products (or services in a couple cases) to make the most of my yoga. And I can’t wait to hear your favorites in the comments!

Yoga Must Haves
now so you can check ‘em all out later!

  1. Funky yoga pants. There is just something about looking back in down dog at some bright, fun yoga pants during a power yoga class. It powers me up for the next flow! For fun patterns, I haven’t found anything as high quality as K. Deer Haute Yoga Wear leggings. They are super light weight, but compressive and excellent at moisture wicking. I do have plenty of other pants in black or solid colors or less eye catching patterns. Some other favorite yoga pants? Lululemon Wunder Under crops, Athleta Chatarunga capris, and Yoga Smoga Run Jump N Play crop.
  2. Tanks with built-in bras. In yoga, I don’t need a ton of support and I don’t like feeling constricted with a ton of layers. Lightweight, moisture wicking tanks with a built-in-bras are a must for my practice. My favorite (and I own quite a few of them!) are the Power Y tanks from lululemon. I also really like the lululemon Ebb To Street tanks and occasional other releases they have. In all honesty, I’m not in love with any other brand for tanks. They tend to feel thicker and less flattering to my body.
  3. Insulated water bottle. After moving and flowing, when it comes time for a water break I don’t want to grab my bottle and drink a huge gulp of warm water. Not refreshing at all! For that reason, I find an insulated water bottle a must. I have a Thermos Large Stainless Steel Hydration Bottle.
  4. Spotify subscription. The BEST and EASIEST way to find great music and put together playlists for yoga classes or to flow to at home. I cannot recommend Spotify enough.
  5. Cork block. In my practice, I like to have a really solid block supporting me in my poses. For poses like triangle, the rubber blocks are fine…but when I’m using them for a supported shoulder stand, my Manduka Cork Block wins hands down.
  6. High quality yoga mat. The best investment you can make if regularly practicing yoga. I have used both the Manduka Pro mat and lululemon’s “The Mat”. The Manduka pro mat is awesome, especially when paired with one of their eQua mat towels. However, I surprisingly preferred The Mat from lululemon. It’s super anti-slip (don’t even need a towel), lighter weight, cheaper, and more comfortable on my knees, hands, etc.
  7. Big headband. I need to keep hair and, more importantly, SWEAT out of my eyes during my practice. The absolute best headband to be able to do that? The Bang Buster Headband from lululemon. I really do love their stuff! Any other headband I used either slipped right off (including other lululemon ones) or wouldn’t keep sweat from running down my face the entire class (many of my old running headbands had this probelem). Now, I own three of the bang busters and never have to worry.
  8. Giant yoga bag. I have to carry a lot of stuff to yoga. Towels, change of clothes for after class, water bottle, snacks, brush, shower stuff, and more I’m probably forgetting. A bag to keep it all organized is a must. The Apera Yoga Tote I received to review a long time ago is still holding up. It looks brand new and serves all my needs in a bag. And then some with it’s antimicrobial properties. That bag has been to a LOT of hot yoga and held a LOT of stinky clothes but doesn’t stink at all. Impressive.
  9. Face wipes. Post class I must wipe down my face. Otherwise? Break out city. I find the Clearasil Refreshing Super Fruit Face Wipes my favorite. They aren’t super powerful and feel quite refreshing. Plus, they smell nice too.
  10. Activewear underwear. I’m pretty careful about the pants I purchase and double checking that they aren’t see through in down dog. However, for extra security (and personal hygiene) I have started wearing these boy shorts from C9 by Champion. I forget they’re even there. Super comfortable and protect against possible sheerness, crotch sweat, and hygiene issues.
  11. YogaGlo. I have started doing a lot more home practice. I generally run through sequences I have planned for the classes I teach, but occasionally want to just follow along like I’m in a class without having to take the time or planning to go to a class. YogaGlo to the rescue. I know they had some issues with the patent they claimed, but I really prefer their site over others, so resubscribed recently. I always get a great practice from the wonderful teachers the site offers and also get great ideas for teaching my own classes.
  12. Coconut water. Hydration and properly replenishing electrolytes is essential in hot yoga classes. During teacher training, I fell in love with coconut water. It is the perfect refreshment post class and would nip any dehydration headaches in the bud for me. The VitaCoco Pineapple is my favorite. I also use Vitamin Water Zero since they started sweetening it with stevia.

There you have it! Some of my faves. Now I would love to hear some of your favorite yoga products in the comments below. Maybe I’ll find a new favorite from you!

I love funky pants too, so fun. Great list! I consider myself a yoga newbie still and love seeing what other people like.

I need to check out Yoga Glo!! I love, love, love my mat… I just need to use it more! ;)

I LOVE the big bang buster headbands from Lululemon! I really want to get more but I’ve been told I may have a headband problem… ;)

They have so many cute ones. I limited myself to a few basics I can wear with anything…namely because I would spend my money on tanks there anyway. Haha!

I bought “The Mat” a couple weeks ago and I don’t know how I’ve practiced without it for so long – well worth the investment!

It’s crazy how antislip it is! I do suggest cleaning it regularly with just a spray of water mixed with lemon juice or vinegar. Don’t use any essential oils or rubbing alcohol on it since it will break down the grip. I’ve had that happen to friends’ mats.

I have a lot of the same favorites but those pants are new to me. Can’t wait to check them out. I have the pro mat from Manduka but it is crazy heavy!

Yea. I loved my Manduka but didn’t realize how heavy it was until I tried “the mat”. Was surprised how much I like it and the lighter weight was a big bonus.

I really dislike slippery yoga mats. I usually use 2, one on top of the other, for thick comfy feel.

I am really interested in those C9 shorts! I like wearing boy short underwear anyway…I don’t get how people workout in thongs I feel like I would feel like I have a major wedgie throughout my workout haha. Thanks for sharing!

12 tinareale October 23, 2014 at 6:07 am

Thongs don’t bother me, but I heard some nasty things about working out in thongs and bacteria moving where it shouldn’t go causing UTIs. Eww! Boyshorts for me ever since. Haha!

I love Power Y tanks and The Mat! Great recommendations!

14 Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries October 22, 2014 at 4:14 pm

I just recently got a couple Lululemon Bang Buster headbands and they’re my new favorite thing! I love that they cover up my greasy hair and keep my bangs out of my face. I should try the Clearasil wipes you mentioned for post workouts!

Love the wipes for my face. I feel like they’ve made a huge difference.
