Chocolate For Breakfast & Home Treadmills

by tinareale on January 6, 2012

Happy Friday, friends! It’s that time again where I fill you in on some of the things I’ve been up to over the past week through Fun Fact Friday. Best way to do Friday in my book. Here we go…

I’ve been having chocolate for breakfast every day this week.

It’s like the holidays ended and I suddenly lost all craving for the pumpkin filled oatmeal I had eaten endlessly since October. The oat obsession hasn’t gone anywhere for me, but I reverted back to a favorite of adding a spoonful of unsweetened cocoa powder to my oatmeal in the morning. No added sugar, but rich chocolate taste/ Sign me up. Swirl some natural peanut butter over the top and it’s pretty much Reese’s in a bowl.

I stumbled across some of the new Chobani flavors at the store this week.

Apple Cinnamon and Passion Fruit flavors. The apple cinnamon one was my favorite. I gobbled it up way too fast since I had the genius idea to mix it with Love Grown Apple Walnut Crunch granola as I ate the last spoonful. I must buy more SOON.

Moving on from food…

The three giveaway winners of the Working Out Sucks book are…

I have emailed each of you to claim your prize! Congrats!!!

I had a really BIG and fun delivery this week.

I saved up for awhile and decided to bite the bullet to add a treadmill to my home gym with all the “New Year” sale prices on fitness equipment. Capitalizing on the trends! I ordered the LifeSpan 3000i, which is apparently one of the most recommended options for a mid-priced home treadmill.

I broke that bad boy in with a  3 mile run Wednesday night after I got it. It’s certainly not as smooth feeling as a commercial treadmill I could use in a gym, but works for short runs I want the convenience to do at home – which happens a couple times a week. Love it already!

I’ve also been picking up my running again since I’m training for one OFFICIAL half marathon and have my eyes on 1-2 more dates in the next few months.

Brrrr…it’s cold out! Thankfully TJMaxx sells some great cold weather running gear for CHEAP. I picked up a Nike thermal long sleeved running shirt and some Mizuno running tights for $40 total. Normally you can’t even get the shirt alone for that much! Felt comfy cozy on my 5 mile tempo run earlier this week. Hey. Another rebuttal to an excuse. “It’s too cold out”?? You can layer and find things to keep you warm enough. Now, get out there!

I went to a potluck dinner last night at church.

It was for a meeting to go over the “Care Meal” program our church has to provide meals to those in need. I know I always appreciated the meals provided after having a baby and want to join a team to help return that favor more often, as well as to others who need them. I also appreciate not having to cook dinner one weeknight.

I brought a Greek salad to share.

I was between making a Greek salad or a repeat on my favorite cookies I made for the holidays – Lemon Gooey Butter Cookies. The salad won out. I know potlucks and people just LOVE to bring dessert. Plus, I wanted to guarantee a healthy option for dinner and to not have more sweets leftover in our house after the plethora of the holiday season. It all worked out. I have lunch ready for today and got to sample a small serving of two other tasty desserts at the dinner instead.

I want to make YOUR workout plan! The rush to get a plan before the New Year has died down a bit for me…and I’m chomping at the bit to make some more. Any takers? I promise to give you just what you’re looking for!

Here’s a testimony from one of my current clients as I work on organizing a formal testimonial page:

Since I contacted her a little over a month ago, Tina has become one of my guides as I journey toward better health. I sought her expertise because I wanted to find a better balance between training and other aspects of my life, and to train more effectively toward my goals. I have been a runner for twenty years, and am highly motivated, but tend to overdo training and underdo rest. Over the last few years I have noticed a decrease in my range of motion and agility, but I’ve lacked the direction I needed to change on my own. Tina has helped me revamp my training in a way so that I am more engaged, and am happier in body and mind. I can already see a difference in how quickly my body responds when I’m out trail running, and am loving that I am challenged on a weekly basis to learn new ways of moving. Tina is a truly gifted personal trainer. I’m thankful to have found her!
- Britta

This is truly such a passion of mine and I’m SO glad I followed my gut (aka God’s guidance) down this path. Smile

Update on my “random ailments”. My itch completely disappeared after 2-3 days of using an antihistamine. Still no clue what caused it, though. I’ve been running pain free for the past week after taking a few proactive steps – like getting fitted for proper running shoes, stretching my calves, icing, etc. And I have been officially diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Which I expected based on a lot of things. Thinking of doing more in depth posts about the foot and thyroid, but don’t know if that would be something you want to read?

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Sweet or savory breakfast? What’s the last thing you saved up to buy?

1 alyssa - fashion fitness foodie January 6, 2012 at 7:51 am

Would you be able to make a 1/2 marathon training plan for me? I took way too long off and the marathon is Feb 26th and right now I’m only running 3 miles outside…HELP!

2 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 11:51 am

I wish I could, but since I’m not a certified running coach I don’t feel that I can. I will say that I used the Runner’s World Smart Coach plan for my first half and think it was a solid plan. Also Hal Higdon’s are good ones.

3 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table January 6, 2012 at 7:59 am

Reeses for breakfast sounds amazing. That may be my post workout meal today!

I second TJ Maxx for workout gear – I cleaned them out on Monday. :)

Happy Friday!

4 Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot January 6, 2012 at 7:59 am

I am sorry about your thyroid but glad you got it figured out!

And I love chocolate oats – so good but yet taste like such a treat :)

5 Alayna @ Thyme Bombe January 6, 2012 at 8:42 am

Congrats on your new treadmill, I’d love to have one some day. And I’m sorry to hear that you do have hypothyroidism. I would personally like to hear more, as I don’t really know that much about it.

6 Claire @ Live and Love to Eat January 6, 2012 at 8:47 am

TJ’s is a cheap workout clothing goldmine. You have my seriously craving chocolate oats now. :)

7 Heather (Heather's Dish) January 6, 2012 at 8:50 am

i’m more of a savory breakfast gal in preference, although i do have sweet stuff (i.e. oatmeal) during the week. who knows why, just works for me!

i’m glad you have some results on the ailments…that’s so frustrating not knowing what’s going on in your own body! i’d love to hear your thoughts and how you’re working with the hypothyroidism :)

8 Anna @ On Anna's Plate January 6, 2012 at 9:02 am

We had a treadmill at our house in PA, and it was a LIFESAVER during the winter months!! You’re going to love having it!

9 Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile January 6, 2012 at 9:04 am

Sooo lucky you got a treadmill!!!! Ahh :D I think I’m a sweet breakfast girl. I usually only have eggs or something when I’m in the mood! I always gravitate towards yogurts, oats, nut butter, etc.

10 Heather @ Run Eat Play January 6, 2012 at 9:11 am

I would love to have a home treadmill, but I don’t have any room for one! It’s not fitness related, but the last thing that I saved up to buy was the Kindle Fire.
I have to keep a look out for those new Chobani flavors!

11 Heather January 6, 2012 at 9:18 am

did you read my post on being diagnosed with low thyroid? its under my tops posts on my blog. It solved a LOT of my problems! Are you going to get on medicine? I went the natural route with armour thyroid but a lot of dr’s won’t prescribe it b/c they are up their pharm. rep’s butts. Good luck! let me know if you would like info, I have done a LOT of research on it!

12 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 1:34 pm

I’m already on some medicine and I’m honestly okay with it. I don’t like having to take meds, but when it comes to some of the things I faced, I feel the pros outweigh the cons for me. And I would rather take the thyroid med than depression meds…which my doc believes some depressive thoughts and cycles I’ve experienced have been related to the thyroid. I”ll still check out your post though and the option you mentioned. I just went with what I could to get started hopefully feeling better right away.

13 jobo January 6, 2012 at 9:18 am

I do want to hear more about the thyroid condition, since I might be diagnosed with it at some point too, unfortunately (seemed high last time I got blood work, they are monitoring). Also, SO jealous of the treadmill! that is awesome! And Chobani, I have found passionfruit and LOVED IT!! I know I will adore apple cinnamon too! As for a workout plan…wow, you priced things so well, I just may take you up on it (virtually??) at some point this winter :)

14 Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon January 6, 2012 at 9:21 am

That bowl of oats is like a healthified version of Reeces Puffs! Reeces for breakfast!
And I’m all about sweet breakfasts! Scrambled eggs turn my stomach in the morning…

15 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 1:44 pm

That’s how I am too. I LOVE eggs, but nearly always have them for lunch or dinner because they just don’t do it for me in the morning.

16 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen January 6, 2012 at 9:23 am

I absolutely love having a treadmill at home. That’s the only piece we started with and now a year later we have a full blown home gym. The comfort of working from home can get addictive! ;)
Glad you got some answers on your “ailments”, I’d definitely be interested in hearing more about the foot & thyroid.

17 Lindsay @ In Sweetness and In Health January 6, 2012 at 9:29 am

Oh wow, I think it would be interesting to hear more about your hypothyroidism! And I seriously need to find this new apple cinnamon chobani…it sounds amazing!! Definitely prefer a sweet breakfast :)

18 Tess @ Cross Country Cajun January 6, 2012 at 9:31 am

I just bought the new Chobani flavors today – looking forward to trying them!

I’m thinking of running the Atlanta half marathon – maybe we will have to meet up if I do! So happy you got the treadmill – I am sure that will make your training a ton easier to fit in.

19 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 1:50 pm

It will! Especially with the kids. And let me know if you do sign up. I would LOVE to meet. There are some other bloggers in the area running it too so I’m sure we’ll have some sort of meet up there. :)

20 Lauren @ What Lauren Likes January 6, 2012 at 9:58 am

I love both sweet and savoury for breakfast! I usually go with sweet! I love fruit in the morning :)

21 Bianca @ Confessions of a Chocoholic January 6, 2012 at 10:06 am

I love chocolate oats! Peanut Butter & Co. Dark Chocolate Dreams is the best for making ‘em :)

22 Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Munches & Moves January 6, 2012 at 10:08 am

I flip flop between craving savory or sweet breakfast. I love breakfast food anytime of day, though! I often have savory breakfasts for dinner!

23 cheryl January 6, 2012 at 10:16 am

we bought a Sole TM last year…love it. totaly remote control freedom is lovely. and i’ve used it while rehabbing after surgery and it is less awful to be stuck at a power walk when i’m not next to a runner who makes me jealous!!

24 Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food January 6, 2012 at 10:28 am

That salad looks so good! :-)

25 Katie January 6, 2012 at 10:33 am

Please post more about the thyroid/foot connection. I would be interested in hearing more about this! The oatmeal looks delicious, btw…

26 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Oh – there’s no connection with the foot and thyroid. They’re two separate issues I had. Sorry if I wrote that in any sort of confusing way. Oops!

27 Khushboo January 6, 2012 at 10:42 am

Sweet breakfasts always win for me! That’s awesome you got a home treadmill (those are the ultimate excuse buster)

28 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries January 6, 2012 at 10:50 am

i’m all about chocolate for breakfast! especially when peanut butter is added to it! ;)

that’s awesome you got a treadmill! i got one a few months ago, and i LOVE it! it’s so nice to not have to drive anywhere to run inside. i’m sure you’ll love it.

29 Jess January 6, 2012 at 11:25 am

Ok for some reason I have YET to try the unsweetened cocoa in my oats but now that you reminded me of it, I’m TOTALLY trying it this weekend! YUMBO!!

ALSO – YAY on the treadmill at home. Seriously, it was the BEST purchase I’ve EVER made. SO SO worth it in the winter!!!!

30 Heather @ Better With Veggies January 6, 2012 at 11:29 am

So jealous of your treadmill! I would love one for our house, but we just don’t have anywhere to put it. This is when having a basement would be really nice. :)

I’m with you on the “too cold to run” excuse – you can always put on more layers!

31 Rosa - Fitness Food Fulfilled January 6, 2012 at 11:40 am

I’d love to hear more about the hyperthyroidism (I’m a nerd like that).

I’ve been loving my savory breakfasts lately, but since it’s Friday I broke down and had something sweet. Aren’t Fridays for that kind of thing?

32 RunEatRepeat January 6, 2012 at 11:55 am

Do you need the treadmill because of outside running weather or because it’s easier with your babies?

33 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 1:56 pm

The babies! I was hauling them to the gym daycare just to do a short 3-4 mile run on the treadmill. I would spend more time driving and hauling them around than I would running. Plus, if one of them was sick – no go. So glad to have it now!

34 Amanda Perry @ Sistas of Strength January 6, 2012 at 3:31 pm

You can also add some chocolate protein to your oats for the same idea and an extra boost of protein. :) I love it in overnight oats…gets all kinds of fluffy. :) I definitely think you should post more about the thyroid issues…so many people have it!

35 Tiff January 6, 2012 at 12:11 pm

Enjoy the treadmill! That will certainly help with training. I have been doing my early morning runs on the gym’s treadmills and my long weekend run outside. It’s cold in those morning hours. Thanks for the TJMaxx tip. Maybe I should look into that!

36 Rebecca January 6, 2012 at 12:30 pm

I’m a big fan of chocolate for breakfast :) And Apple Cinnamon Chobani??? Be still my heart and get me to the store!
I am super duper jealous of your treadmill…this cold winter running is really getting to me!

37 Shannon ~ My Place In The Race January 6, 2012 at 12:38 pm

I must find these new Chobani flavors! What store did you find them in??? YUM!

38 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 1:57 pm

I got them at Kroger…but actually saw them at Walmart too.

39 Lee January 6, 2012 at 12:43 pm

I have been on the hunt for those Chobanis but haven’t found them yet. Did you find them at Publix?

40 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Nope. Kroger!!

41 Alyssa @ Life of bLyss January 6, 2012 at 12:45 pm

I’M SO JEALOUS. I have been looking all over for those darn new Chobani flavors!!

42 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats January 6, 2012 at 1:03 pm

I need to hit up TJ Maxx! And my problem with running in the cold is it hurts my lungs and gives me what feels like a sinus headache! Never pleasant!

43 Sara January 6, 2012 at 2:55 pm

I need to go to TJ Maxx apparently! You look adorable in your new gear too! And so happy! I would be interested in hearing more about hypothyroidism.

44 Katie @ Healthy Heddleston January 6, 2012 at 3:52 pm

Looks like a god treadmill Tina! And I’d love to hear more about the hypothyroid. Most of my dads sister’s have that and my dad used to have hyperthroidism when he was younger.

I may contact you post-baby for a fitness plan. I definitely need some advice on weight training.

45 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 7:58 pm

You know I would LOVE to do it!

46 Andrea (Run. Learn. Repeat.) January 6, 2012 at 4:26 pm

I just barely had a snack that looked a lot like your chocolate breakfast. I added banana to mine as well. It was SO GOOD. I’m so jealous of your at-home treadmill! Can’t wait for the day when I have one too! Enjoy!

47 Mindy @ clueless nut January 6, 2012 at 4:59 pm

That oatmeal looks delicious! Reese’s are one of my favorite desserts, especially topped on frozen yogurt.

My Kroger only had ONE passion fruit left, and a few blood orange (I bought both). The apple cinnamon was sold out. Seems as if I have a lot of CHO lovers and foodies in my area! ;-)

48 Bethany @ Accidental Intentions January 6, 2012 at 5:07 pm

I should check out TJ Maxx for workout clothes. I’m a big fan of Target’s C9 line, but the fancy-pants big brands are just so tempting…!

Mmm I love putting peanut butter in my oatmeal. Peanut butter and honey are my go-to add-ins for oatmeal. I’ve tried cocoa powder before…not obsessed, but it’s not bad. I don’t think I could handle it without adding a decent amount of sugar, though, which is why I normally opt for the pb + honey route.

49 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 7:59 pm

I added some NuNaturals stevia drops for sweetener. Love that stuff since a little goes a long way. :)

50 julia January 6, 2012 at 5:15 pm

I’m interested in hearing more about your hypothyroidism…thank you for sharing what you’ve written so far!

51 [email protected] January 6, 2012 at 5:28 pm

I’ve been looking for those new Chobani flavors with no luck yet (and there’s apparently a BLOOD ORANGE flavor too!!!!) – hopefully soon! Have a great weekend, Tina! :)

52 natalie @ southern fit foodie January 6, 2012 at 6:55 pm

The new apple cinnamon Chobani is the BEST!!!

53 Liz (Little Bitty Bakes) January 6, 2012 at 6:58 pm

Yay for a home treadmill! I’ve seen so many bloggers getting them lately. Though I’d think in GA you wouldn’t need to use it too much, or at least, not as much as us northerners. :)

OMG… I’ve been craving warm oats all week long. And now I’m craving chocolate peanut butter ones. Yum!

54 tinareale January 6, 2012 at 8:02 pm

I don’t need it so much for the weather but for the kids. Them getting sick or schedules sometimes make it hard to do an outdoor run when Peter would be home to watch them. Plus, I hated hauling them to the gym for me to do one of my easy short runs.

55 Amy Lauren January 6, 2012 at 8:56 pm

You’re so lucky your TJ Maxx has such good workout gear! Our is definitely less than stellar, although the selection might be good right now since it’s January… will have to check it out :) . Good luck with your running and enjoy your new treadmill.

56 Amykinz @ Foodie 4 Healing January 6, 2012 at 9:04 pm

Congrats on your first client testimonial! That’s so great and I’m rooting for you. :) Also, I just picked up the Mango flavor of Chobani & can’t wait to try to it! Also wanted to say your oats look yummy & that I actually have a “PB Cup Oatmeal” recipe, too! Here it is, if you’re interested:

57 Katie January 6, 2012 at 10:58 pm

What a great testimonial! That has got to feel so rewarding!! Congrats!

58 Geraldine January 7, 2012 at 7:39 am

My dad bought a treadmill about 7 or 8 years ago and it was a brilliant investment. I hate running in windy/rainy conditions so it’s perfect in Winter. I love putting on an episode of Real Housewives of BH and running for the whole show. The time goes so fast. Now you have no excuse not to go for a walk or run! :)

59 Nicole January 7, 2012 at 9:29 am

I had my thyroid removed a year ago after dealing with hyper and hypo over about 5 years. I’m working on a post to cover the whole thyroid issue and resolution. It’s something that soooo many women deal with. Happy to chat if you ever have questions.

60 [email protected] Palate January 8, 2012 at 3:38 am

Totally with you on the chocolate breakfast, I’m a chocolate overnight oat addict! I would absolutely LOVE to have a treadmill at home, sometimes braving the wind/rain and cold, although I do it, is just a bit on harsh!

61 Elmina January 9, 2012 at 8:24 pm

I was wondering about your treadmill. I have been wanting to buy one for a long time now but I am not too sure about making an investment on something I am not sure about. Here’s the thing. Sometimes when I go to my gym I have to choose a certain treadmill because the rhythm of the belt in not smooth. Sometimes when I step down the belt will stop or really slow down meaning I almost fall on my face…not cool. Have you experienced any of that anytime? Sometimes I can pick a treadmill that is the same exact brand and everything and it gives me no problem. I think it might be my weight but I am not sure. It’s not just my gym…it also happened in my college gym.

62 tinareale January 9, 2012 at 9:01 pm

I have never experienced that so don’t have any suggestions. :(

My biggest suggestion in buying one if that’s the case is to go through a place you can try them out and get one that has a good service/parts/etc warranty. Wish I had more help to offer!

63 [email protected] January 30, 2012 at 12:48 pm

Oh my gosh I thought adding to chocolate to my breakfast was just something I ha always dreamed of as a child. I love eating outs so I can’t wait to try adding in some delicious coco to change it up, and with peanut butter! Thats like having a reese’s cup for breakfast, talk about a great start to your day!
